Hi I am intending to do a roadtrip from Miami to Indiana during the post-christmas-new year period and will be passing by Tampa and staying for abt 2 days to sightsee.
Can someone recommend what I can do there and whether the beaches are suitable to visit. Would it be too cold? Thanks.
Tampa can be either unseasonably warm (highs in the 70-80 degrees F range) or unseasonably cold (highs in the 40-50 degree F range) in Late December, early January. The beaches are always nice though but the water temperature will be about 60-62 degrees F so probably too chilly to swim.
Depending on your age (21 & up) and preferences, you may want to experience Ybor City in the north Tampa downtown area and perhaps Busch Gardens in nearby Temple Terrace. Channelside has everything from the Aquarium to IMAX.
St. Petersburg, to the south 20 minutes or so, has the Dali museum, Baywalk and the Pier, Florida's largest bookstore, an underground garden park.

The Travel Slut
These cool-looking birds are found everywhere in South Florida. They are primarily shore birds who come inland to take advantage of easy meals left by people in trash cans (as you can see in the photo). They are so common in fact that people were looking at me funny when I was photographing them! If anyone knows the proper name of these birds, please let me know!
If you plan on spending time at the beach, bring along a smaller bag to hold towels, sunscreen, a bottle of water and a few snacks etc. SWIM SUIT!--you can't go to Florida without bringing one, unless you are planning to buy one down there. Dress is casual by day but bring some smarter clothes for evenings. If you forgot it, they do have stores and you can buy whatever you need Having a camera is great--I take my mini-spy cam everywhere b/c it fits so nice in the smallest of purses--I went on my last trip for 4 days and used 2 rolls of film--but I love taking pictures! Bring a towel to lay out--or a sarong is useful too and saves room in the bag. Sunscreen if you need it and don't leave the house without chapstick.
Oh and if you fill a water bottle with alcohol (say vodka) no one is the wiser....
clearwater beach is the closest beach from downtown tampa. the town of clearwater beach has an excellent collection of hotels, restaurants, bars, and of course it's beautiful gulf of mexico beach. see my clearwater pages for more information. from downtown tampa take US 60 (kennedy blvd) west about 15 miles to clearwater beach.
Water side park - a great place to hike or just go on a picnic
Little Manatee River State Park is off U.S. 301 in Manatee County. From Tampa, take I-75 south to Exit 240A. Go east to U.S. 301, then south four miles to Lightfoot Road. Go right on Lightfoot. The park entrance is on the right.
Hours are 8 a.m. to sundown daily.
The park fee is $4 per carload.
The Castle in the Ybor City area of Tampa is great if you like gothic music. Two floors, each with its own music. Varieties of gothic wear, although you will see 'normal' people in polos and shorts. Just go with all black and you'll be fine.
