Flight Company Suggestions please

by meash

Hello all!
I'm flying to Tampa on 23rd December (hopefully) and staying til Jan 3rd. Im looking for suggestions of the best flight company/website to get a cheap flight from. I'm not familiar with a site to get a cheap flight to this area. I'm hoping to fly from Edinburgh Scotland, but I guess I could go from anywhere else in the UK if it was worth a treck to the airport to save a couple more quid! Has anyone found a bargain that i'd be happy with? What price should I expect? I've seen flights around £700 at the moment and I feel that's a bit steep, but I don't want to hang about in case it gets worse than that! Cheers, meashX

Of course you are flying at the peak holiday travel times so prices will be probably be double normal.

I have friends and neighbors that fly regularly between England and Tampa (TPA) and they always use Stansted and say they save 1/3 to 1/2 in flight costs on the average compared to Heathrow. They fly different airlines and just go for the best deal.

If you plan to rent a car, you also may want to consider Orlando (MCO) as it is just 60 miles or so away from Tampa and sometimes the flights there are less expensive due to Disney's influence.

Finally, if you are flexible, try adjusting your fly dates on either end one day at a time and see where the cut off is for the holiday rates.

Good luck.

Thanks for your kind responses. I know it's a drag when people ask questions that they could actually find out for themselves if they sat down at the computer and did a heavy search!
I checked out the ebookers, and got momentarily excited at the prices there. Unfortunately, they were all fully booked, and the prices that were available were over £800!
Gulp.
Looks like the holiday may have to be delayed.. gutted.. should have been more prepared a few months ago..

Cheers anyway!

Travel Tips for Tampa

Tampa’s most famous historic...

by Tolik

Tampa’s most famous historic landmark, the Tampa Bay Hotel (www.plantmuseum.com ) was built in 1890s to lodge rich railroad arrivals. With its onion domes and minarets, it looks like a set from the Arabian Nights. Hotel was bought by the city in 1905 and become part of the University of Tampa in 1933. See more details in my travelogue.

Tampa Bay Lightning at the St Pete Times Forum

by Ewingjr98

The St Pete Times Forum was completed in 1996 as the home of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Tampa Bay Storm. Built at a cost of $139 million, the arena holds around 20,000 for sporting events and concerts.

The Tampa Bay Lightning began play in 1992 and they won the 2003-2004 Stanley Cup (I own a Penguins jersey that is older than this team!). In the team's early years, it gained headlines by allowing Manon Rhéaume to play goal in a preseason game, thus becoming the first woman ever to play in an NHL game.

I finally saw my first game here in February 2010 when the Bruins played the Lightning. After Boston scored the first five straight goals to take a 5-0 lead, they gave up the next four in a row and we saw a great 5-4 finish. This was also the Lightning's last home game before the Olympics, so their four Olympians, including team USA's Ryan Malone, were honored.

The games are very expensive:
$10 to $20 to park near the arena (free if you don't mind walking at least 5 blocks)
$22 to $200+ for tickets (though they have a few $10 each night when the ticket window opens)
$8 to $12 for beer
$8 to $10 for hot dogs

Tampa's World War I Memorial & Memorial Highway

by Ewingjr98

At the intersection of Memorial Highway and Kennedy Boulevard in west Tampa is a small monument that consists of a granite tower topped with an eagle. This is the city's World War I Memorial, which contains the names of 106 local veterans killed in action during World War I. This monument was the work of the Tampa Rotary Club.

The WW I monument was originally constructed in 1921 to mark the southern end of Memorial Highway, which ran from Tampa to the Pinellas County line. This 15.5 mile road was created to honor local veterans of World War I. The highway's southern terminus was originally at Howard Avenue, but it was later shortened to the present location at Bayshore Boulevard.

The World Wildlife Fund called the Withlacoochee State Forest ''one of the 10 coolest places in North America.'' The trailhead for the Croom trails is five miles east of Brooksville at the Tucker Hill Fire Tower on Croom Road. Three loop trails (a total of 14.8 miles long) weave past live and scrub oaks, hardwood hammocks, longleaf pines and cypress trees.

Maloneys Local Irish Pub - Westchase, Tampa

by Ewingjr98

Maloneys Local Irish Pub is a great, new Irish pub way north of Tampa near a lot of nothing except the heavenly World of Beer bar across the parking lot. We actually came here because we planned to stop at World of Beer, but this place looked cool, too, so we stopped in.

Our first impression, other than the full outdoor seats and the sounds of live music, was the jack ass bouncer who just walked up from across the bar and stood in front of us a few seconds after we entered. Didn't say a word. I almost walked right past him, but my girlfriend said, "do you need our IDs?" His response: "you're pretty smart." My thought was that he must be pretty freaking smart in his minimum wage job checking IDs at the door of a pub. At least he can (hopefully) read.

Other than that, the bar was excellent. It was packed full of people, and they had a good selection of European beers (we had s Harp and a Hoegaarden for $4.75 each). The music was great with a good variety of rock and pop, some with a unique such as the singers version of "I hope you had the time of your life," sung as "I hope you had a good time with my wife."

Great bar, but the bouncer is a dick.
