Thanksgiving Dinner and other places to eat in/around Tampa

by heywinks

My bf and I are arriving in Tampa Thanksgiving Day. Away from our families, just us two. It's our first time to Tampa - where do you recommend having Thanksgiving dinner? Nothing super pricy but nothing too low key either. We have a car so can travel around. Any other suggestions for great places to eat while we are in the area welcome as well. Thank you!

Thanks, Donna. I read about a restaurant called La Columbia in Ybor City. Have you been there? What do you think about going there for Thanksgiving dinner? Or should I wait another day to go?

By all means, go to the Columbia! - Ybor is the quaint old Cuban district & just named one of the top 10 streets in America. good walking area, lots to see.
Otherwise 20 mins away is nice stuff in Clearwater Beach area.

Good idea...go to eat Spanish food there than to eat turkey. I was thinking of going to the Ybor City location of La Colombia. I know there's a location at St. Pete's Pier. Is the Ybor City one better?

Thanks! Another question since we're sort of on topic: How do you pronounce Ybor?

Travel Tips for Tampa

Tampa Tip

by donovanel

There are soo many--where oh where to begin?? It all started one nite with a few margaritas and pinky swears--those damn pinky swears! I will always remember GWIT: hanging with rockstars and baseball players...ybor city...bouncers bribing us to visit their clubs...red bull and vodkas...my friend's piercing experience...walk of shame...showstoppers...and who could ever forget the infamous kiss!

Strawberry Festival

by Kushelkitten

Okay so it isnt in Tampa but its still in Hillsborough County and there really isnt much to see or do in Plant City other than the Strawberry Festival so here it is in my Tampa section.

This is a big carnival in celebration of the Plant City stawberry harvest. There is a midway with rides and games and if country music is your thing a lot of big name country artist perform here.

Even if you dont like country music stop by for the strawberry shortcake. Its well worth it.

This year it is runs from the 3rd to the 13th of March (2005)

Picnic Island

by Kushelkitten

Picnic Island is somewhat of a local secret. Most tourists dont know that Tampa has a great beach in the city limits and think that they have to drive to St. Petersburg or Clearwater for swimming.

It is located in the extreme south of Tampa in Port Tampa which was once a town of its own. You will pass by the lovely old homes in that neighborhood as you drive Interbay Ave to Commerce Street. The nicer houses with thin out as you approach the port and the gasoline tanks. As soon as you think you have lost your way you will be there. The turn off is on your left, Picnic Island Blvd. and there is a large sign welcoming you.

Ammentities:

Fishing Pier
Boat launch
picnic area with tables and grills
toliets
showers
and a long beach.

Personal note:
As a child I used to find complete shells here not just broken pieces. One of the reasons I loved this place.

Safari Wild

by tampa_shawn

As of 10/2008 this park is not opened and a projected date is not given so please check back with me here or the companies website below...we'll let you know when it is open.

The park is actually in Polk County which is near Lakeland. Lakeland is ½ way between Tampa and Orlando so it will take you at least 35- 45 minutes to get there (depending on where you are in Tampa and the traffic)

The Safari Wild website states ” Safari Wild offers a personal wildlife experience where visitors are surrounded by zebra, gazelle, scimitar-horned oryx, ostrich and other species of African wildlife—all sharing the beauty and diversity of savannah environment.”

According to the local papers when this facility opens tours via electric cars will be about $50 a person and there will be overnight cabins on the property that the guests can stay in
Keep checking back for details when the park opens
