Clearwater is the nicest beach in the Tampa area.
If you are only looking for a nice beach, go to Daytona. You can park on the beach, and it's only a 40 minute drive from Orlando.
Have fun!

Jim,
Day trips from Orlando could include Daytona Beach and NASA's Space Flight Center...as far as Tampa. Clearwater Beach and St. Petersburg Beach are great and my favorite. I also like DeSoto Beach and Anna Maria Beach..quiet more remote, less people, more natural, ie, more enjoyment.

Your 5 year olds will love Tampa's zoo, Lowry Park Zoo. It was voted the most child-friendly zoo in the U.S. of A. Also, there's the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) which has a whole section of hands on activities for children and an IMAX theatre. There's also things to see downtown, like the Tampa Museum of Art which is small, but in a beautiful building on the water facing the University of Tampa (which also has its own Henry B. Plant Museum). Ybor City is in Tampa. I take my 5th graders on a trip there every year and they LOVE it.

put it like this... for a cheap beach with no parking tolls go for Tampa beach, it's like a strip of sand with rocks and maybe rats.... if u want something clean, huge and bright go for clearwater beach no doubt.......... there are many other nice beaches as well
Travel Tips for Tampa
University of Tampa
by Ewingjr98
University of Tampa is located on the Hillsborough River just across from downtown Tampa's Central Business District. UT has nearly 6,000 students who are able to graduate with degrees in about 100 different areas. The most impressive and historic building on campus is Plant Hall, built in 1888 and the headquarters for Theodore Roosevelt and others prior to the Spanish-American War.
Famous graduates of the University of Tampa include Major League Baseball manager Lou Pinellla, wrestlers Chyna and Paul Orndorff, MLB first baseman Tino Martinez, and former Florida Governor Bob Martinez. Infamous politician Rod Blagojevich also attended the school for a few years.
Water, water everywhere
by ZenGator
Water is everywhere in the Tampa Bay area. The bay, the gulf, dozens of lakes and several rivers make it a veritable watery playground.
If you like saltwater fishing, you can do so from bridges, docks and piers up and down Tampa Bay. Two of the more popular land-based hotspots in Tampa are the Gandy Bridge and Ballast Point Park. You'll catch more on the bridge than at Ballast Point, but the attached park makes BP a better choice for anglers with kids.
If you want deep-water fishing, there are hundreds (at least) of options on the gulf beaches -- everything from professional guided multi-day excursions on luxurious yatchs to little tubs you can rent on your own. Do a web search for "Tampa Bay Fishing" and you'll get just a tiny sample.
Keep in mind that Tampa is not actually on the Gulf of Mexico, so few fishing trips leave from Tampa proper. If you don't have your own gear, you can rent or buy from many tackle shops located near popular fishing spots.
Canoe for You
by ZenGator
If you really want to get back to nature and see how beautiful this area used to be, canoe the upper Hillsborough River. Lots of gators, turtles, and live oak trees hanging with spanish moss still line the banks.
A good place to shove off is Hillsborough River State Park northeast of Tampa. It has places to hike, camp, swim, and picnic and it's hardly ever crowded. The park also rents canoes, so you won't have to carve your own out of a log. And if you're really daring, you can brave the river's hidden rapids.
Find out more at the Florida State Park System's website (see below).

Live Music and Good Food
by tafurojo about Green Iguana Bar & Grill
The Green Iguana is always kicking with live music, great food and average priced drinks. Only complaint is when I went on a Saturday afternoon and the music was entirely too loud for a daytime setting. Don't forget to leave your dollar bill on the wall! No dress code, very casual
