Hotel in the downtown or port area

by alicemaude

Hello and thanks for any help, we are arriving in Tampa on the evening of 9th March, will be hiring a car the next day for 7 days, than joining a cruise on the 18th March, will be back in Tampa for the night of the 1st April, flying out at 7am on the 2nd April. Hope to collect the car from Hertz at South Florida Ave (looks to be near downtown). What hotel should we stay at, and what street does the Downtown/Uptown connector trolley run in, also where do you get the Teco street car from. Is the complimentary catamaran cruise around the port worth doing?

Re: Hotel in the downtown or port area

by FrostyJW

Hi - The Channelside district of downtown Tampa is where the Cruise liners stop-over, and there are several Hotels in that location and nearer into the downtown area (15 mins walk), though I would imagine they are all very costly, being Marriot or Hyatt chains, that serve the Convention Centre. The TECO electric trolley car runs between Tampa Convention Centre area, and YBOR city, passing right by Channelside and the Aquarium (if you look at a map of Tampa you will see the locations) A shuttle bus service runs between the Marion Transit Centre (Marion Street HART Line buses) and downtown Tampa, past the Convention Centre and joins with the TECO Trolleyline. For details and bus line maps, see the Hart Line web pages. I know Tampa well from many visits, but stay with friends so have no detailed knowledge of the Hotels in the downtown area! Feel free to get in touch if you need any further info!

Packing List

Wear light clothing cause Florida gets VERY hot but humid. It rains alot in the Tampa area too so be prepared for showers and lightning. Tampa is the lightning capital of the world so becareful not to hold up and metal poles.

Express Boat to Key West

by tampa_shawn

This express boat actually leaves from Ft Myers Beach but is one of the best ways to get to Key West (most of the roads through the keys are one lane and traffic often backs up)

The shuttle takes just 3 1/2 hours and has AC Cabins, Satellite TVs and a full bar

Prices vary but are normally under $100 for a round trip - right now they are $83 RT when purchased in advance

Indian Grocery Stores

by tampa_shawn about Patel Brothers AND House of Spices

If you love Indian food Tampa has several large Indian grocery stores and numerous small ones in Tampa and most are located in the same area on Fowler Avenue. This area also has quite a few Indian clothing, nick knack stores and quite a few Indian Restaurants (there are also some great Vietnamese restaurants in this area too)

The two best grocery stores are:

1) "Patel Brothers" 1251 W Fowler Ave, Tampa - (813) 558-9090 (just East of the Rail Road tracks on corner of Fowler and I275 North)
2) House Of Spices" @ 2005 E Fowler Ave Tampa, FL 33612-5503 - opened December 2010 (less than a mile east on the same side of the street as Patel Brothers) in strip mall

this area is quite congested so keep your eyes open! Both of these stores are new and quite large What to buy (at a fraction of the price of regular grocery stores)...Spices (Traditional indian spices include: Garam Masala, turmeric, saffron, madras curry powder, cumin, coriander)...ginger paste (amazing...! ginger/garlic paste is excellent too), paneer (cheese...one of the few places you will find unless you make your own...), lentils (try the red lentils they are difficult to find in regular grocery stores), beans, rice...

There are also spice mixes for different dishes and frozen indian dishes...if you are new to Indian food try "Butter Chicken" (or murgh makhani) & Palak paneer (spinach and paneer) both of these dishes go over rice...if you don't want to cook rice you can put over couscous (grain that you only need to add boiling water too) Spices, rice and indian food at a fraction of the cost you will pay at a regular restaurant
