Will be in Tampa end of Sept. Looking for a beach nearby that might have some fairly good size waves, not for surfing but for swimming.

Re: Waves

by TheTravelSlut

The Gulf action in late Sept. is based on current weather conditions (storms in the area, etc) but is generally fairly smooth based on my time in area.

Certainly if you are looking for body-surfing waves you may be disappointed unless there is a good onshore wind blowing.

This website has some great kiteboarding information for the area and if you check where kiteboarders are going, you will get the best waves more than likely.

Have fun, be safe!

Travel Tips for Tampa

Buy a sandwich at the airport....

by ranger001

Buy a sandwich at the airport. It will be very good, and you can promptly hop the next flight to Bermuda, Brazil, or whatever your next destination is. My favorite thing in Tampa is the fact that I will leave it. That's the only good I can find in my Tampa experience. Those of you can stay here, and rot if you like, it's all the same to me. I have never seen idiotic moronic provincials like I have seem here. (If any of these words are too much for you, please let me know, my email is: Olsen1000@aol.com. I am not trying to sound elitist, but people have to have some shame, or else we all turn into animals.
Signed proudly,
Carl E. Olsen

The summer months here are hot and humid! It is also rainy season in July and August. Sometimes it can rain all day but usually it's just afternoon shows. Bring an umbrella! Try to bring an umbrella or some sort of protection to the beach. The UV rays are harsh and you will burn quickly. Trust me on this one. I am dark complected and the sun can be get pretty harsh.

sunburn your redneck face

by arasnosliw

Like I have just mentioned, locals love to make fun of the Courtney Campbell Causeway beach, aka the redneck beach. I can't complain, Ben T. Davis beach is really quite accessible, and it's not like most people go to the beach to enjoy the quality anyway. If you're looking for a pristine beach, you'll go out of your way to find one. Otherwise, most people will just sit on their beach chairs and tan...er burn themselves. Why inconvenience yourself to go to another beach to burn yourself anyway?

Peter O. Night

by Ewingjr98

This wood frame cottage, built in 1890, is now headquarters for the Tampa Historical Society.
This small house was the honeymoon cottage of local businessman Peter O. Knight and his wife Lilly. This is one of the first residences constructed in Hyde Park--Tampa's first neighborhood-- and it exemplifies Tampa's middle class's lifestyle of the era.

The Tampa Historical Society uses the Peter O. Knight house as its headquarters. On display are photographs, furniture and artifacts from the Tampa Historical Society collection. The society also holds off-site programs at at Oaklawn Cemetery (c.1850, Tampa's first public burying ground). The Tampa Historical Society also publishes the Sunland Tribune, a journal of local history.

Latin Food Store -La Bodega

by tampa_shawn about El Exito (success in english)

Tampa has a large Latin population and we finally have a large super market catering to this market - this is where to go if your looking for something you can't find anywhere else. This store is filled with foods from South and Central America and the Caribbean.

If you are a food lover like me it is also a great place to visit - a wonderful way to try some new foods.

Also has a small restaurant and a bakery
