Why are rental cars so expense the week of Feb 17th thru Mar 4th

by terrymmiller

It seems that the daily cost of renting a car is between $70-$90 dollars for Feb 17th and the 2 weeks following... What is going on other then spring training?

Hi - don't know what's going on but I just checked Travelocity. The cheapest rate for the 2+ weeks is total $513 - $31 a day.... (It was with Alamo)

Weekly rate (applies to each 7 day period)
2 week(s) @ $187.62 $375.24
1 extra day(s) @ $31.27 $31.27

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Subtotal $406.51
Taxes and Fees $107.12

Total: $513.63

I think it is a Spring Break week. I needed a car for a one day on Feb 8th and then 13th - 16th. It was cheaper to get a car for 8 days from the 8th than for 3 days from the 13th.

Travel Tips for Tampa

Relax And Enjoy

by tigerlover

We were just at Busch Gardens, be sure to slow and enjoy this park. The bird show was really nice. You got to see a lot of animals both on the walk thru and Rhinno Rally. Take the time to really watch and enjoy all of the animals, they are a lot of fun to watch. There are also several coasters there for all of must have thrill seekers. Be sure to take the time to feed the birds, it is worth the $3 to have quite a few birds visit you. I was here 25 years ago with my grandparents and now I was able to bring my girls to enjoy it. We all really enjoyed feeding the birds together.

Guavaween

by Kushelkitten

Tampa is known as "The Big Guava" and thus Guavaween is the big Halloween celebratiion in Ybor City. This event draws more than 100,00 people every year and is lead by Mama Guava.

The Legend. (Taken from Ybor Times.com)
" Legend has it that in the late 1800s a Spanish food broker came to Tampa looking for guava forests. His goal was to get everybody eating guava jelly and cooking with guava paste. But the climate and rising land prices prevented his erecting a guava factory near Tampa. Ybor City became a land of cigars instead."

Its okay for kids early in the evening but as the night progresses it gets loud and lewd. Lots of alcohol.

The cove apartments pool on Westshore

by ERiger

This pool which is located in an apartment complex directly behind the Green Iguana on Westshore is one of the best places to watch a sunset on the Tampa side of the bay. The best time I have seen a sunset is usually in the summer after a thunderstorm of some sort.

The atmosphere of the pool is usually very relaxed and sometimes there are people with guitars to treat you to a little local music feel. Mostly college kids and mid twenties to thrities live in this comlex, but you won't find a much better view without tresspasing for a pool as this pool was built before the mangroves act was passed in Tampa.

If you also have a free weekend day this pool is usually packed with college kids/adults just hanging back listening to music and drinking some beer. Make sure to bring your bathing suit, towel, and plenty of sun tan lotion.

It is location at 4003 S. westshore BLVD and the gate is usually open from 5-8 pm.

Visit the Manatees

by tampa_shawn

There are several places outside Tampa to see the Manatees in their natural setting. The best viewing is normally on cold winter days when the Manatees come to these warmer (relatively speaking) springs to keep warm.

All of these sites are in stunning locations. I'd bring extra water and picnic basket and shoes for a nice hike along one of the areas trails.

Favorite sites of the locals include:

1) Crystal River - town North of Tampa with tons of options

2) Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park - also functions as a rehab center for the manatee and other natvie Florida animals. Rangers have programs during the day and there are also scenic boat tours of Pepper Creek.

3) Ocala area (will add more later)

Paranormal in Tampa

by tampa_shawn

Tampa also has a paranormal club called Tampa Ghost Watchers. I haven't been to any of there meetings or events but it sounds quite interesting.

According to one member they recently spent the weekend at some haunted hotels and make trips to others. It sounds facinating. They also have monthly meetings.

Their blog is below. According to this "We are a group of volunteer investigators of ghosts and paranormal occurances. We welcome your comments and stories." and if you know of a haunted house in Tampa (or the SE) let them know they have the equipment and resources to investigate.
