Tampa on 4th July
by popolos
I have a conference at St Pete's beach until 1 July, and was planning to hang around a few more days until 4 July. Is there anything interesting happening there? What about the hotel and traffic situation? Will rooms run out fast and also flights out of Tampa? What about airport situation?
Oh, one last thing, what's temp like during that time? Thanks.

Thanks. You're spot on. I'm clearly from out of town.
Ok, I will be staying at this TradeWinds Island Grand Resort on St Pete Beach, so what's around this place? Beach and natural sceneries will be fine with me so I could just stay here for a few days. Will there be any 4th of July fireworks here?

If you are staying in St. Pete Beach you'll probably not have to go anywhere!
The beach coast is typically filled with boats and fireworks. It fact all across the bay. Channelside (Tampa channelside) will have their fireworks display I don't want to take away from that but so will Downtown St. Pete, St. Pete beach up the coast to Clearwater and Temple Terrace (inland) and many others along the bay area but, the beach is great because you are looking over dark, dark...a dark sky without city lights and dark waters...it is a great display and you don't have to worry about driving back. Boaters typically adorn their boats. Its a great party atmosphere all over the bay just go wherever you decide early and be patient if what you like is the show and drive safe. Enjoy your time just watch the news on TV in your hotel room for more info as the time draws near and they will have more info for you.

If you get the chance, you may want to run over to Coachman Park in Clearwater (about 10-15 miles from St Pete) which is having a weekend festival over July 3rd and 4th with bands and food and fireworks. Should be a great time.
Travel Tips for Tampa
Tampa
by cobrioc
Tampa is a city of History. Founded in
the early 1800's as Fort (George Mercer)
Brooke, at the mouth of the Hillsborough
River where it empties into Tampa Bay,
its original reason-for-being was to quell
the "Seminole Menace", but afterward it
became central to activities both military
and civilian. From there Tampa City has
grown into a sprawling metropolis of
huge proportions. The Tampa Bay History Center.

This is not really a cultural tip, but you have to try Kash 'n Karry muffins! I fell in love with them despite I don't really like sweet. There is a cinnamon one on the left and the right one is with chocolate chips. MAN! I'm gonna miss 'em! They're the best! :-)
H.B. Plant Memorial Park
by tafurojo
The HB Plant Memorial Park is located at the University of Tampa along the Hillsborough RIver. It is a great place to relax and have a picnic, take pictures of downtown or watch the UT kayak team row underneath the Lafayette Bridge.
Fort Brooke Park and Tampa Bay History Center
by Ewingjr98
Fort Brooke was established in 1823 at the mouth of the Hillsborough River in he newly acquired Florida territory. Its founders were Colonel George Mercer Brooke, after whom the fort was named , and Colonel James Gadsden, who later became famous for the Gadsden Purchase. The fort itself was used during the three Seminole Wars and during the American Civil War, witnessing the Battle of Fort Brooke in 1863 and the fall of Tampa in 1864. Fort Brooke was decommissioned in 1883, became an independent city in 1885, and was annexed by Tampa in 1907.
Today the Tampa Bay Convention Center stands on the site of Fort Brooke. Fort Brook Park actually occupies the section of Tampa's Riverwalk Park between the convention center and Channelside. This park has a monument to those killed in the Seminole Wars, the Tampa History Center, and other attractions. The park was established in 2002.
The Fort Brooke Cemetery was established in what is now downtown Tampa, then just north of the fort. The cemetery was established during the second Seminole War (1835 to 1842), and most of the graves were lost until 1980. When the nearby city parking garage was built the graves were discovered and 102 soldiers were moved to Oaklawn Cemetery.
Farm Stores - A Florida Institution
by Ewingjr98
Farm Stores originated in Miami in 1935 and was named Land O' Sun Dairies, Inc. The Farm Stores drive thrus were created in 1957 as a convenient retail option for this dairy.
Today there are about 200 Farm Stores in Florida, most are located in former gas stations and other tiny storefronts with drive-thru lanes on both sides of the building. Just pull up, and the worker will greet you at your car window. Order your milk, cream, butter, ice cream, and other items, it will be brought to your car, you pay, and you're off! You'll never have to leave your car again!
