Yankees Spring Training in Tampa
by londonlover
I'm planning a trip to see some Yankees spring training games in March...I've never been to a spring training game before (never been to Tampa, either), so I was wondering if anybody here could give me advice on:
1. A hotel convenient for Legends Field (I was thinking of AmeriSuites Tampa Westshore)
2. Good restaurants near the field (I've researched two places named Crabby Bill's and Carrabba's Italian Grille)
3. Ticket-buying advice (They officially go on sale on January 5th, but if it's anything like buying regular season tix, my chances of getting good seats that way are small. Has anybody bought spring training tix on ebay or stubhub.com?)
Thanks for any help...happy new year, everyone!
Tara

Hello. It's been many Years since We went to Spring trainng games but I think there should be no worry on getting a ticket to a game. Just buy at the gate. Im sorry I can't help on the other questions. Back in the early 80's We went to see the Yankees in Ft Lauderdale. We went all around Florida to see different teams play also. George Strienbrener(pardon spelling) sat about 5 rows behind Us at a game and I had never heard of Him. My Cousin was the baseball lover and I was in Florida to see the 3rd Shuttle launch. Times have changed since then and I would love to go see some Spring trainning games. Happy New Year.

I would not stress out about the tickets. You will be able to but tickets when they go on sale.
The spring training stadiums are small and the worst seats are not far from the field. Not like the huge major league stadiums at all.
Carrabba's are usually pretty good for a chain.
Travel Tips for Tampa

Go see the University of Tampa. The building was originally the Tampa Bay Hotel. Plant hall was built at the turn of the century in 1900. In 1933 it was turned into the University. There is a museum there as well. The silver Minarets are the school trademark and are visible from downtown. Check out the beautiful homes on Bayshore boulevard and Davis Island. Graduating from college and Being commissioned a Lieutenant in the Army. Racing in cross country races for the university was one of my fondest memories as well
Let Me Suggest Sunscreen
by ZenGator
If you're not used to a lot of sun, you'll need to apply sunscreen often -- unless your idea of a nice tan is fire engine red. Locals can often spot tourists a mile away by their brand-new 'Florida' gear and peeling sunburns. The ozone layer is thinning, so be prepared... Mosquito repellent is a must if you'll be outside in the evening/night, especially in the summer or out in nature. But for some unknown reason, 'skeeters are not very common in Ybor City. Perhaps the vile combination of bad smells and bad music keeps them away, or maybe it's the high average blood alcohol level which discourages the little vampires... Don't bring non-essential items to the shore at the Pinellas beaches. There are very few places to stash stuff while you're in the water, and everybody knows the ol' 'hide the wallet in the shoe' trick.

Al Lopez Park, another favorite running spot. It's right next to Tampa Stadium and the NY Yankees spring training complex. There is a two mile path that loops around the park and you can even go fishing here. I actually ran a marathon in this park to qualify for the 96 boston. 13 laps on a two mile course was something else. there is also a great playground for kids there
The address is 4810 N. Himes avenue. It's between Dale Mabry blvd and Himes Avenue.

Bourbon but Bigger!
by tafurojo about Ybor City
Ybor City is a mixed spot for partying, eating, drinking, and just hanging out. The older generations may find it more pleasant to make a late afternoon/early evening venture to some of the great restaurants and bars Ybor has to offer. You can enjoy a true Irish style pub at "James Joyce" or listen to blues and jazz at the "Rare Olive". You can walk in and out of the many shops and markets offering a taste of different life styles. If you are in Ybor the right time and can catch one of the many parades you will experience one of the greatest gatherings of floats and beads outside of New Orleans. The downside to Ybor City for some is after 10pm when it gets extremely crowded and can become uncomfortable for some. 7th ave (the main strip) becomes a wondering walkway for drunks, party animals and people looking for a REALLY good time! Use caution when bringing your children with you. There are different dress codes for each spot in Ybor City... most places are very casual ... but a few up-scale clubs require white shoes and no jeans. You will occasionally also come acrossed clubs that don't allow hats or require that you wear your hat straight forward. You may want to check ahead before going out that night.
