Going on a cruise

by teresaroman

Hi,
I have a group of 20 coming into Tampa to go on a cruise. We were all coming in a couple of days early to enjoy some things that Tampa has to offer. I was hoping someone had some good suggestions as to where to stay. We were hoping to avoid having to rent a car. Is there any hotel that is convenient to some attractions and things to do w/o having to get a car. We were hoping to find a hotel w/ shuttle service that would also take us to the cruise terminal. We were also hoping to stay in the price range of about 85.00-150.00 a night. If you have any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated! I'm so lost and I want this trip to be so good for everyone. Most of the people that are traveling have never taken a trip before and are so incredibly excited!! Thanks in advance for your help!!!!! It is most appreciated!!! Teresa

With that size group, you might want to contact the Tampa Tourism Office: www.visittampabay.com. You probably would worry yourself quite a bit if you try to arrange things on your own. That being said, you will get very good advice from the members here on VT. You can look on the Tampa forum and the Tampa travel pages here on VT as well. Gary

Did the Tampa Tourism Office provide you with help ? If they didn't, as Donna mentioned, the cruise lines may offer pre-cruise packages. Your Airline probably would have such packages available as well. Gary

I would say that St. Petersburg or Clearwater are much nicer than Tampa and since they are pretty much attached, it shouldn't be hard to travel between the two. St. Petersburg is more walkable and has more attractions than Clearwater, but it is pricier. At Clearwater the main attraction is the beach, which I thought was gorgeous- most motels are right beside it, but there are few cultural attractions there or good restaurants (there are restaurants so you won't starve). St. Petersburg restaurants had delicious healthy meals with a wide variety of types of cooking-- all seemed to be prepared with the finest of ingredients and helpful, enthusiastic staff and we did not find it any more expensive than the restaurants in Clearwater or Tampa. If I was on a vacation, I would try to stay in St. Petersburg instead of Tampa - it is much more of a vacation destination.

Welcome to the Tropics!

In the summer, Tampa is warm with afternoon rains. You'll need protection from the sun most of the time, but a slicker for when it rains. Bring sunblock. Lots. And something to keep the bugs at bay. They don't like citronella smell, so that's a good bet. Tampa, like all of Florida, is very humid. A brush and a cloth are a must for the serious photographer (or just someone who doesn't want fuzzy photographs). I suggect spraying your tent with Camp Dry if you go camping - it keeps the bugs and rain out. If you are from another country, I would highly reccomend making sure that your travel vouchers are printed in both English and your original language. Also, I think that an international driver's license is a very good idea. I used to work for a rental agency - - trust me on this.

José Martí Park -- Ybor City

by Ewingjr98

Ybor City is definitely not off the beaten path, but most visitors go there for drinks and clubbing rather than to learn the history. Cuban history is abundant in Ybor City, and José Martí Park is a key example of this. This fenced-in park containing a life-size statue of José Martí, sits on the site of a former home he used in Ybor City.

Martí was a leader of the Cuban independence movement from Spain in the 1860s through the 80s. Due to his writings against the Spanish government he was imprisoned in 1869, then exiled to Spain. In the 1880s he spent time in New York City, Tampa, and Key West mobilizing Cuban expatriots and exiles against Spanish colonial rule in Cuba and Puerto Rico. Martí died in battle in 1895 while leading a force of exiles against Spanish government troops. This independence movement ultimately led to the Spanish-American War that was fought in Cuba, the Philippines, and Guam.

Martí Park is located at the corner of 8th Avenue and 13th Street in Ybor City. It is just across the street from the Cadrecha Plaza Station on the TECO Line Streetcar route. There is also a bust of Martí in Ybor City located in front of the Cuban Club.

Great Outdoor Shopping

by emilienoelle about Old Hyde Park Shops

The Old Hyde Park Shops are located on Snow Avenue and are a refreshing change from mall shopping. There are about 2 blocks of shops ranging in variety from Williams Sonoma to Pottery Barn, Godiva, and Restoration Hardware along with many independently owned places such a a florist, a stationary store, and a milner's. There is a park which is centrally located with beautiful flowers, benches, and a fountain as well as a few coffee shops for when you get tired of shopping! We had a fun afternoon here the day before Thanksgiving!
