We booked a room overnight because I had an interview in Tampa the following day and we thought it looked great on the internet. Please don't let the internet pictures fool you like they did us! The front lobby is nice and the people were polite, but hardly friendly. We got checked in quickly and our reservation was correct. Then we headed to our room.
The door to our room had a 1" opening at the bottom between the door and the floor - that should have been our first clue. When we opened the door, there was a musty, dirty odor in the room, like it had been shut up wet for a while. We got rid of it only by turning on the air conditioning to high for an hour or so (we left to go to dinner elsewhere). The air conditioner, by the way, was an old window a/c unit that had been put into the wall - it was quite loud and did not work very well as far as keeping the room comfortable.
They advertise that they have a heated pool, however, when my husband went for a swim, he couldn't stand being in the pool for more than a couple of minutes due to the fact that it was ice cold. We did not try out the spa because we were only going to be there overnight, so I can't comment on it.
The bed was like sleeping on concrete - hard and lumpy. Neither me nor my husband slept well due to the hardness of the bed and the pillows that were flat and hard. The bathroom was spacious, but there was very little water pressure for the showers and the towels were scratchy. I do have to say, though, that there were plenty of towels and an extra blanket.
We had breakfast in the cafe the next morning. The food was passable (except for the burnt bacon), but the waitress was seen only to order, bring food and bring the check. And we had to wait quite a while for any of those things to happen. She never once checked on us or any of her other customers to refill drinks or see how anyone was doing - she vanished into thin air after taking our order.
As a result of all the problems, we will never return to the Tahitian Inn and would not recommend it to anyone. We did leave their comment card filled out with all the problems we found.
Directions: Right off the highway on a very congested street. Difficult to get out of in traffic.
They have suites in the main building, but the regular rooms with king / double beds have outdoor walkways. I stayed in a regular room somewhat near the pool. It was very plain - walls so white they were scary. However, the room had a fridge and microwave.
The exercise room is totally furnished - with several weight machines as well as the usual treadmill / stationary bike. They also have a spa onsite. Strange combination, I think - kindof like a motel with a spa.
Unique Quality: Nice exercise room.
Directions: plenty of commercial options closeby (stores and restaurants). Only 10-15 minutes from the airport.
So, the Tahitian Inn has been around forever. It just went through some remodeling and I was all excited because I thought they were going to take it back to the era in which the Tahitian Inn thrived and swank it up. However, they decided to put in a pretty sterile, though upscale, facade and totally ruined the hotel rooms by making them as cookie-cutter as they come. It's located right in the city, so with no beach or scenery to speak of, you'd think they would try harder.
Unique Quality: There's a tiki bar and pool. The on-site diner is pretty good, too, but nothing to write home about.
My hotel, the Tahitian Inn
Well that pretty much sums it up , will be in Tampa next month for 3 days. Do locals have a favorite? thanks:-)
I stayed at the Hard Rock Casino once and loved it. It's a little pricey, but its a great place to stay. The Tahitian Inn is comfortable, they offer massages, etc. The scenery is a busy in town road, though.
