Things to do for the weekend

by chanstein

Hello!

My boyfriend and I are planning a long weekend in West Palm Beach next weekend (March 16-19) and would love some tips from locals or people who have travelled there before. We are from NY and this is our first time there and we are really excited! We will be staying at the Brazilian House (we won that in a contest!) and hear that it's a great martini town!

We would love info on restaurants, bars, nice beaches, shops, and maybe a loungey place to dance to cool music. I also have one day alone on Monday where I could explore a new area too. We are in our mid 30s and would love places that cater to our age group.

Any info would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!
Sarah

I have never heard of the Brazilian House....Would you be staying at the Brazilian Court Hotel or Bradley House, either way both are on Palm Beach. Very nice...quaint. Brazilian Court is only blocks from Worth Avenue which is worth at least a stroll up and down it, be sure to meander down the Via's. You can stop in to Taboo for lunch, dinner or drinks. It has been around forever. On the ocean near Worth Ave. is Charlies Crab. Up a couple of blocks from Brazilian Ct. on County Road is Hamburger Heaven. Great spot for a burger and you never know who you will see there. The beach is not the greatest in PB but that is the one that I go t0. You will want to go over to WPB to City Place. That is one of the most happening areas. There are alot of restaurants there and I have rarely been disappointed; Colombia Restaurant, Brewzies, Boston Seafood, Cheescake Factory, Blue Martini, etc. There is shopping & movico theatre! Another nightspot is Clematis street which is not far from City Place.
This weekend there was an article in the paper about young professionals and where they hang out. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/accent/content/accent/epaper/2007/03/11/youngpros_side.html
Day time you might also want to rent bikes and ride the bike trail in Palm Beach. You go behind alot of the mansions that are on the intracoastal waterway. A fun peek. Have fun!

I agree with whats been said.

I don't know that much about the night life. The Blue Martini at City Place in West Palm Beach does have dancing. Thats about all I know. Don't know if its "the place" to dance or not.

There is a casino ship that leaves from Palm Beach every day. I belive its called the Palm Beach Princess.

The main point I want to make is that Palm Beach and West Palm Beach are not that big. Its easy to find your away around. My suggestion is to ask someone at the hotel about things to do.

Travel Tips for West Palm Beach

Clematis By Night Every Thursday Evening

by sunlovey

Head downtown to Clematis street and proceed east towards the library. Expect to be joined by throngs of people celebrating the near end of the work week at Clematis by Night.... life music, food vendors, some craft and whatnot venders AND a big beer truck- People of all ages, from babies to the elderly come out on this night to enjoy the balmy south Florida evening to music with friends... There are many restaurants right there as well, many with outdoor seating so you can have dinner and still be part of the festivities if you'd like...

There is a ground-level "dancing" fountain there as well that is lit up and the local kids love running through it and getting soaked (they come in their bathing suits!). And since most nights are pretty warm here, it's a lot of fun for them. So if you have kids, and it's hot, let them experience this if you want. Oftentimes there is even a lifeguard there to keep on a eye on everyone.

The Roadhouse is one of my favorite restaurants. They have steaks, and just about anything else there--serve you huge drinks, and all the free peanuts you can eat. Moderate prices.
If it's your birthday, you are treated to a free, huge hot fudge sundae. Also, tubs of peanuts on all the tables that you can snack on. Sirloin steak, with baked potato, and their delicious house salad.

A beautiful taste of Japan in Palm Beach County....
This place is spectacular. Upon your arrival I suggest you watch the introductory movie, explore the gallery with a permanent collection and visiting exhibits, then wander through their beautiful Japanese gardens and finish with a delicious lunch at their patio restaurant, The Cornell Cafe overlooking the pond.

I highly recommend the Edamame to start and the Asian Eggplant with Garlic Sauce for your entreƩ. They also have a nice sushi selection.

Lastly stop in their gift shop for some beautiful Japanese souvenirs & wares.

Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex

by sunlovey

Two seconds from Red Reef Park in Boca Raton (just between the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway nestled in the native trees sits Gumbo Limbo. If you're into sealife, fauna and flora- go here! There is a $3 suggested donation to get in.

Head to the back of the entrance to witness four saltwater pools chock full of cool sealife... i.e. nurse sharks, hammerhead sharks, sting rays, horseshoe crabs, seaturtles, eels, starfish, puffer fish, etc. etc. There are volunteers surrounding these pools happy to answer any questions you might have about the animals. I think we stayed there fascinated by the beautiful little seaturtles for atleast an hour. This is a must-see!

There are two nature trails, one takes you along a boardwalk through a natural South Florida hammock and mangrove forest. Half way down the trail there is a cool 40-foot high wooden observation tower, climb up its many steps for a beautiful view of the Atlantic on one side, and the Intracoastal Waterway on the other. The other nature trail is a foot path.

There is also a small butterfly garden, classrooms/, tons of examples of native plant life and a cute little gift shop.

Check out one of my West Palm Beach albums for more pics from Gumbo Limbo and closeby Red Reef Park.

"West Palm Beach"

West Palm Beach is my home town with so much to do. We get to watch adult sea turtles come out of the sea onto the beach and lay thier eggs. Then wait for the little babies to hatch weeks later, and run to the sea!
There are tiki bars with live music, fishing, and snokeling. WE are two hours from the Florida keys and Two hours from Orlando! One hour from Miami. What else can you ask for??
