Moving to West Palm Beach

by ghinay

Hi,
My husband and i are two recent PhD graduates moving for our first jobs to West Palm Beach. We have been having a very hard time choosing an apartment area, especially that we have to do it from Tallahassee! Every time i find something nice, affordable, and close to work, i look for reviews and i all i have been reading is about crackheads and guns!!! HELP!! The work location is on lake boulevard, but we have no problem living even 20 miles away, as long as we can sleep peacefully at night and can walk on the street without having to worry about getting robbed or not finding the car!! We do not have kids yet, but planning to start a family soon, so safety is number 1 issue for us! We would appreciate any advice about areas/complexes to live/not live in.
Thank you
Ghina

It all depends on your plans. Will this apartment you will get temporary or a long term residence? Anyway, places you do not want to live in are Downtown and Riviera Beach, this neighborhood being north of Downtown WPB.
I live for example in a pretty quiet area, low crime, family oriented and above all well served (at the nearest intersection - 5 min drive - I have Publix-Walgreen's-Wal-Mart- 4 or 5 places to and to make it short, 3 well served plazas).
The area I am in is called Greenacres. It is SW of WP. Going to downtown for a night out from here will take about 15-25 minutes depending on traffic and the way you drive.
Also, you will find nice places on the Intracoastal, everything east of US1, but it gets very expensive.

Another area whose prices went up but it is pretty safe and sort of upscale is Wellington, which is another 15 minutes drive west of Greenacres. It really is not far from the city and you can be more relaxed when you get home.

Keep looking and if you have other specific questions, I will try to help you.

Just happened to view the discussion forum. Although its several months since you posed the question this might be of some general help. Assume the Lakes Blvd. you mentioned is Palm Beach Lakes Blvd. If so, the general area of Bear Lakes centering on Village Blvd. might be worth looking at. There is a variety
of rental units from townhouses to apartments fairly priced in todays crazy market. Convienience to downtown, airport and shopping are pluses. Wellington is
more desirable but the extra half hour drive is a negative. W. Palm isn't a tropical paradise but its getting better all the time.

Hi,
sorry, another question here.

my sister is planning to move down here within is the next 6 months and she is looking for a place south of WPM and north of Ft Lauderdale. she may be priced out of Boca but looking for an area well suited for a 45 single woman who is looking to continue her career in real estate.

anyone have thoughts on Boynton or Delray beach or other areas?

thanks,
steve

Generally speaking both Boynton and Delray are retiree oriented. The geographical layouts are pretty straightforward. The beach area is high priced.
Then comes a patch of neighborhoods to be avoided between downtown and I-95.
Going west from I-95 is where all the activity is but may not be suitable for a single. Just north of Ft. Lauderdale is a nice community with a good mix Coral Springs Look it over!

Travel Tips for West Palm Beach

Humidity vs AC

by kellycal

If you are visiting anywhere in South Florida, the thing you should always remember is: it is 98 degrees with 98% humidity OUTSIDE....and 65 degrees INSIDE!!! We keep the electical companies in business. So what that means is bring your coolest shirts, shorts and pants...and then pack a sweater! Toiletries all accounted for..this is a big city. Due to the fact that Doctors are a dime a dozen here, the medical supplies and services available are extremely abundant, so if you run out, it will be ok. Definately. The west coast has the awesome sunsets, but we have the awesome sunrises. Virtually no camping in the city, so the outdoor gear would be for the beach. And, please believe me....you WILL burn!! So, if you are not coming from a tropical country, and don't bring strong (30SPF-45SPF) sunscreen, after your first day at the beach, you will be miserable for the rest of your stay--we see it all the time. Either bring or buy a hat that will shade your face, drink as much water as you can, and be extremely careful between 12 noon and about 3-3:30 pm. Most people wear coverups over their bathing suits, but unless you are going in to public eating places, a lot of people dont. A big beach towel is not necessary since there are so many at such inexpensive prices here, but bring a bag to the beach to keep the keys, camera, etc. in, as the sand gets EVERYWHERE!!! Summertime is the rainy season, so it downpours every morning and every afternoon for about an hour or two. Winter time there is very little rain.

The Zoo at Dreher Park or the Science Museum for the kiddies. If you want more then head downtown to Lake Worth or to Clematis Street in West Palm Beach. City Place is the new thing they built so check it out. It has shops and lots of people hang out spots. The architecture is funky, sort of Italian, Greek, French, 50's and Disney in a blender.

"west palm beach"

west palm beach is a city located near the ocean in southeast florida. west palm beach is the county seat of palm beach county. the town of west palm beach was incorporated in 1894. in the 1890's the railroad tycoon henry flagler built the florida east coast railway to the area and developed palm beach as a wealthy winter resort. flagler built the royal poinciana hotel on palm beach and bought land on the mainland to house resort workers and servants. this worker's settlement was the basis of the city of west palm beach today. the town of west palm beach grew significantly during the 1920's florida land boom and many of west palm beach's historic buidings were built during this decade. the city began to decline during the great depression and did not recover until the 1970's. in the 1970's the pratt & whitney aircraft company built a factory in the area which had a significant economic impact on the area. later in the decade IBM and RCA also built facilities in the area. in recent years the downtown area has been redeveloped into one of the nicest shopping and entertainment areas in southeast florida.

west palm beach has much to offer the tourist when visiting southeast florida. the downtown clematis street historic district and the city place development has scores of shops, restaurants and bars. the beach towns of delray, manalapan, palm beach, and singer island are a short drive from west palm beach. west palm beach is home to the world class kravis performing arts center and several excellent museums. for those interested in architecture west palm beach has a number of 1920's florida land boom era buildings and homes. west palm beach has a good central location for visiting the natural attractions of southeast florida.

"City Place, West Palm Beach"

City Place is just a few blocks but is packed with cool places to go if you are just visiting for fun. I particularly liked the food you can get in the various restaurants.
The place is very popular on weeked nights but even on week days you will find plenty of visitors.

"The HHG Theater"

The food at the Bellagio's retaurant is delicious!
