The General at Barnsley Resort
The General is an A-Class course, rated 17th in the Georgia.
Bent Grass greens and Bermuda Grass fairways, highly sculptured to maintain the best playing surfaces. The roughs are long and play fast during the summer. The greens are relatively small but play true with few undulations.
The short course plays 5600 yards for 18 holes while the back tees play at 7200 yards.
We played only 9-holes at the short tees. It cost $60 with a cart and a senior discount.
The panoramas are just superb on this course regardless of how well you play the hole.
If you play before 10am, you may encounter some fog from the lake and ponds.
You should stop into the pro shop to stock up on balls and tees and get some information from the locals on how to play some of the longer holes. Errant power shots will definitely get you in trouble.
It is better to take a more conservative shot even though it costs you an extra stroke to get to the green.
The fairways on some of the holes are pretty easy being wide open. Then some of the holes are "waisted" with trees on the periphery and traps guarding the green. Two holes have a marshy reedy area that is a sure stroke loss if you shank into it.
Nine holes was humiliating enough for us. Double bogeys abound; three-putts on the green after making really nice approaches. One lost ball and one in the marsh. Hope you have better luck (or skill).
