This picture was taken in the Founders' Memorial Garden on North Campus.
athens is city located in north central georgia. athens is the county seat of clarke county and home to the university of georgia. in 1785 abraham baldwin granted a charter for the university of georgia to be built at cedar shoals georgia. in 1801 john milledge renamed the town athens after the academy of plato and aristotle. prior to the civil war athens was a prosperous mill town and became an important trade center in the 1840's because it was a stop on the atlanta-augusta railroad. during the civil war athens was an important supply center for the confederacy. fortunately general w.t. sherman by passed athens in his infamous march through georgia thus saving it's beautiful antebellum buildings. today athen's economy is based mainly on the university of georgia.
athens is a very vibrant college town with a good selection of hotels, restaurants, and bars. for those interested in history and architecture there are numerous historic homes and buildings located in downtown athens. athens is a very interesting place to visit when in north central georgia.
