Going to Atlanta for a month..

by sheherezad

Hi! I'm going back to Atlanta for a month August 23, after 13 years! Has much changed and are there any VT meets I could attend? I'll be staying in Emory area, near the CDC which I'll be visiting (the purpose of my visit, actually!).

Cheers! :-)

More traffic!! I don't know about the VT meetings since I have never gone. Atlanta has changed a lot in my opinion, but then again I was raised here. You will enjoy a trip to the new aquarium. I think the downtown area is nicer than before. There are lots of new restaurants. Enjoy your visit. I am sure you will have a good time!

There have been quite a few changes. You'll have missed the rise and fall of Buckhead. It is changing it's identity, so there are stores and shops that have moved, opened or closed. There is a very large shopping area called Atlantic Station that was a mess of vacant warehouses when you were here last.

The traffic has gotten worse and Midtown/Buckhead and a couple of areas have busted out quite a few skyscrapers.... All in all..... it's grown quite a lot since you were here last!

As for VT meetings, I'm sure we can arrange one, but there aren't that many meetings here in Atlanta. But we're game to having more of them!

Hi! Thanks for the advice :-) JulesTwo has also written about the 'fall' of Buckhead - what a pity :-( Re: skyscrapers - fortunately I was able to see the downtown skyline on the walk down from CDC at Clifton Road to the Villa International Atlanta, where I'll be staying. So I should be able to see their 'rise'! ;-). Yeah, I've checked Atlanta for VT Meets and noticed there're none! :-( Glad you said there'll be more! :-) Cheers!

We'll have to put one together while you're here. :-) There are always a couple of us willing to meet our fellow travelers while they are visiting. You said you're going to be here from August 23 through mid september? I know that Labor Day weekend will be bad for me, but I can do just about any other weekend.

Re: Going to Atlanta for a month..

That'll be great, Chris! :-)

Yes, I should arrive in ATL August 23 and leave Sept 20 at the earliest. I can't recall when Labor Day weekend will be though (which week of Sept!). Here in Malaysia Labour Day refers to May 1st ;-)

Cheers :-)

Labor day weekend is either the last weekend of August or the first one of September. The first Monday of September is labor itself, so the weekend could fall in August or September.

Hmm.. Looks like that'll be my second weekend in Atlanta ;-)

Travel Tips for Atlanta

Annual Peach Drop

by TexasDave

Not to be outdone by the famous festivities in New York's Times Square, since 1989 Atlanta has hosted the annual New Year's Peach Drop at Underground Atlanta. The peach is 8' tall and 8' wide and weighs over 800 pounds. The event has grown to be the largest New Year's Eve celebration in the Southeast and is televised nationally. Each year different nationally known singing artists perform leading up to the Drop at midnight.

One advantage it has over New York is that the weather tends to be quite a bit milder here.

Atlanta Book Exchange

by PVHS02

Atlanta Book Exchange is located across the street from political hub Manuel's Tavern in Poncey-Highlands and just up the street from new Poncey-Highlands staple - King of Pops.

The place is literally a house full of books. All books are half off retail value and they accept used books in exchange for credit.

Dinner and Drinks!

by rsleisk about CAFE TU TU TANGO

CAFE TU TU TANGO is a cool restaurant with a good bar area upstairs. The place is located in the heart of Buckhead. The walls are adorned with artwork of local artists. Artists are creating ART around you as you order and eat your meal!

A good place to have a drink and scope the scene after work and a nice start to the evening events. Cool as you want to be...

Peachtree, Peachtree and Peachtree

by goingsolo

Peachtree Street is popular in Atlanta. That's because there is more than one street so named. There are several. Well, many actually. Its easy to get confused.

Peachtree Street runs north and south through the city. West Peachtree Street runs parallel to Peachtree Street Main, but is west of PSM and finally merges with it somewhere north of the city. There is also a Peachtree parkway, in addition to Peachtree Avenue, Peachtree Road and various other Peachtrees. Its important to know which Peachtree you are referring to. If this is too confusing or too stressful, I'd suggest ditching the car altogether and using MARTA.

Q: Downtown shopping? "Most of my time in Downtown Atlanta has been in/out travel for business or convention time when I'm all consumed with convention..."

bocmaxima profile photo

A: "No, most of the shopping has moved out of Downtown, unfortunately. It's a fairly easy MARTA trip up to Buckhead or to Lenox Square though."
