alternate entrance to the underground

by GTGarland

In the early 70s I remember entering the underground through s street level door thaat then went down a LONG staircase to an area near the calliope. Does this entrance still exist and where?

I remember that Calliope at one end of a dark hall-way and the steps leading up to ground level. It was functioning and the various steam-powered whistles, horns and percussion would play various circus tunes....I also remember one of the venues on that hall-way had various antique coin-operated arcade games, kinetoscopes (moving picture viewers)and something unusual that I haven't seen since. There were various large aquarium size glass boxes on pedestals. Each glass box contained a "scene" (farm, haunted house, zoo, etc.) with various human and animal characters (made of metal or porcelain) which were attached through the floor of the box w/ a metal stem which would move along a track or groove. The stem holding these characters were attached to a timing mechanism, much like an old clock mechanism. The characters and scene would move around when you put in a coin. These still worked, eventhough they were from the 1800s or early 1900s. After several years, this antique arcade room and the calliope were gone. Do you remember this?

Travel Tips for Atlanta

Atlanta Braves

by grayfo

The Olympic Stadium for the 1996 Games was built just south of Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium and was retrofitted into a baseball ground 1996 and 1997. Grand Entry Plaza, the main entrance to Turner Field, was built after 35,000 seats and part of the track-and-field complex of the Olympic Stadium were removed. Turner Field, the "Home of the Braves" has now become an Atlanta landmark.

What struck me most was the mix of technology and entertainment. At all times, fans are entertained via the BravesVision video board in center field, the PlazaVision board in the Fan Plaza and over 500 television monitors situated throughout the stadium.

Although I didn’t fully understand all the rules, I did enjoy the game, shame the home fans didn’t get the result they wanted.

A Beautiful GArden for All

by BruceDunning

Thanks to Ida Cason, this is for the public to enjoy. There are 13,000 acres and many sections displaying the butterflies, birds and buildings. The operation does sell real estate as a primary/secondary function to keep the non profit trust going. They have trails and old log cabin, and other structures to enter and enjoy. Golfing and recreation is also part of the facility.

A neighborhood bar

by balfor about Neighbors

Neighbors is in the same building as Hand in Hand but has a completely different feel. It has two sections, one part is restaurant and one part is bar. neither side is huge and the place definately has the feel of a neighborhood pub and doesn't pretend to be anything more.

On mondays from 8:30 until about midnight, there is live karaoke. (which, in my opinion, is MUCH better than dead karaoke! Many of the singers are quite talented, but there are also the normal folks who should have listened to themselves BEFORE trying to sing in public. I expect that some of those will be turning up on American Idol some day!

All in all it isn't a bad place, but can get smoky a little too fast for my taste.

Pictures will be forthcoming. Casual but not sloppy or dirty.

MARTA

by FreeCloud

From the airport, it is very easy to get to downtown, just follow the sign to ground transportation, till you see MARTA. $1.75 token per trip can be purchased from machine. Atlanta is not under efficiency pricing system (i.e., it is flat fare regardless of length or time one travels). N-Day visitor's pass unfortunately would be only available if you are among a group of 15-20 AND prereserved X-days ago!
