There is a Holiday Inn Select on Capitol Avenue about 1/2 mile from Turner Field. Also if you stay further in downtown there is a MARTA shuttle from Underground Atlanta continuously starting about 90 minutes before game time. It will cost you $3.50 for a round trip ticket, the ride takes about 15 minutes and drops you off right at the stadium and picks you up there afterward as well. Hope you get to see Galvine or Smoltz pitch. If I can be of further help, let me know.

What Rex said! Actually, if you wanted to stay on any of the hotels along the Marta line, you could stay anywhere from downtown north, through mid town and up to buckhead. There are several hotels in the Lindbergh area that are a short walk from a marta station as well as several in the buckhead area that are right on the Marta lines.

There is no direct rail line to the park, but Marta runs shuttles from the Five Points station to the ball park.

Alternatively, it might be fun to have some VT'ers get together for a ball game! If that were the case, I'm sure a ride could be arranged to and from the park. :-)

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefied State Park

by goingsolo

Kennesaw mountain is a short drive from Atlanta and is located just west of Marietta. The park was the site of two major civil war battles during Georgia's attempt to prevent the Union army from invading the destroying the state in its campaign to reach Atlanta. Although the Confederates held the mountain during the battle, they were eventually forced to retreat.

The battlefields and earthworks have been left intact at this now pretty and popular park. Several small monuments and markers stand in tribute to those lost on both sides of the conflict.

For more information, feel free to visit my Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield State Park page.

Clubbing and Drinking

by KaiM about Buckhead

Buckhead is a whole part of the city with countless bars, restaurants and clubs. When I was there we went for a pizza first and then headed to an Irish Pub. The atmosphere in there was gorgeous. A band was playing live music and the Heineken beer was affordable.

Rental cars

by flannery2

Atlanta is a city best seen by car. MARTA (Atlanta's subway system) is clean and efficient, but if you are used to more extensive subway systems you will be disappointed with it. Rent a car if you can afford it.

Tip:
When you are on the highway, be careful of "exit only" lanes that always seem to be popping up on the right. Keep one or two lanes to the left until you get near your destination exit.

Caution:
I recently rented a car from Thrifty's "airport" location and strongly recommend against renting from them. Although they claim to be located at the airport online, they are not really right at the airport--it's actually a mile or so away. And the people there pressured me into paying extra for insurance, something I never usually do. They more or less threatened that if I didn't purchase the insurance, they would find something wrong with the car when I returned it. I called their customer service when I returned home and the money was refunded, but I didn't appreciate being lied to and pressured at 1:00 a.m. when I finally got to Atlanta and picked up my car.

I have had luck with Enterprise car rentals in Atlanta in the past, but I don't know if they are located at the airport. Plenty of other companies are though.

Q: Downtown shopping? "Most of my time in Downtown Atlanta has been in/out travel for business or convention time when I'm all consumed with convention..."

A: "No, most of the shopping has moved out of Downtown, unfortunately. It's a fairly easy MARTA trip up to Buckhead or to Lenox Square though."
