Hire a car!
by maryamy
Like most places in the USA, you will need a car to get anywhere, unless you like being stuck in your hotel room.
I went to Atlanta for work for three days, but forgot to take my driving licence. Imagine the hassle...
Thankfully I found a lovely cab driver by the name of Sam!
Cotton Pickin Fair
by TexasDave
This could easily be placed in the 'Off the Beaten Path' section since it takes place in the tiny, rural town of Gay, Georgia, about 50 miles S. of Atlanta
It is held two weekends a year, the first weekend of May and October. Admission is $5 adults, $3 children 4-12.
This arts and crafts fair highlights rural Southern living at the turn of the last century.
There are stands selling antiques, all kinds of handicrafts, a variety of food. Local groups ranging from grade-schoolers up to the 'Sassy Seniors' provide entertainment dancing and singing. It's a very enjoyable way to spend a whole day.
Amacilola Falls an easy 1 to 1...
by Nikal
Amacilola Falls an easy 1 to 1 and half hour trip north of Atlanta. Many photo ops and fantastic trails to hike. Only $2 to enter the park. Take 400 out of Atlanta which turns into 19 then watch for 53 to Jasper and follow the signs.
The Westin Hotel for rotating cocktails!
by MarvintheMartian about Downtown Atlanta
I am not really sure where to put this tip, so here will have to do for now!
The Westin Hotel is a large luxurious hotel in the center of the Downtown area. We didn't stay there as it was out of our price bracket, however I did read somewhere that it has an observation platform and a rotation bar.
This sounded great to us - and low and behold it was!
I would warn that it would cost something like $5 to just go up the lift - or a minimum spend of $10 once you are up there.
Of course we went for the minimum spend and had two very good Martini's! Plus we and took in the view of Downtown and beyond during sunset.
Great view around the city and quite fun.
Just a thought - it did seen like they were quite lacks about people going up in the lift and just not paying or checking if they had drinks on exit. Also it's possible to take an alternate lift down which avoid the payment area. Not sure you'd get away with it.... but worth a thought!!! :-) Smart casual or smarter!
MARTA I liked it
by Brijb20
We travelled into Atlanta from Sandy Springs on the MARTA subway train. It runs partly under and partly overground. While on the train I was amazed to hear locals critisizing the system heavily, I don't know why. Personally I found the system clean (ish), comfortable, frequent and cheap. Of course I don't live there and don't have to use it everyday. I suppose an Atlantan could come to the UK and drop on a lucky day and think our transport was ok.
All I can say is it did the business for us.
