Area around Variety Playhouse safe?

by NoelRobert

Are the streets around the Variety Playhouse, 1099 Euclid Ave NE, Atlanta, GA, safe for pedestrians at all hours? I want to walk the seven blocks from my hotel on Highland Ave to the Variety Playhouse and return late that night. Thanks! Noel

Sorry for the long delay.... I have been remiss about checking the Atlanta forums...

Those streets should be perfectly fine. While there is quite an eclectic mix of people in and around little five points, it is actually completely surrounded by nice and frequently upscale residential areas. I would only be concerned if you're walking down streets with no sidewalks.

Travel Tips for Atlanta

Traffic on Peachtree Boulevard

by yooperprof

Ah, the traffic snarls of Buckhead. It's the Way We Live Now. Phipps Plaza Mall meets Lenox Square Mall meets Target and Borders and Filene's Basement . . . And I've never seen so many Hummers on the road as in Atlanta. It's good to know that the American Dream is safe in the New South.

Turner Field

by tafurojo

Turner Field is home of the Atlanta Braves. The Atlanta Braves were one of the hottest teams of the 1990's. Several World Series games were played here. It is about 2-3 miles South East of downtown.

Cecil B Day Butterfly Center

by dustmon

If you are needing a nice day trip from Atlanta and go to Callaway Gardens, make sure and save some time for the Butterfly Center---over 1000 butterflies from more than 50 species flutter around landing on you and all the flowers around in a weather-safe environment in the glass-enclosed conservatory. Take your camera and have a blast with all the color! The Gardens fees are adults $18, Seniors $15 and children $9, which gets you into all aspects of Callaway including the butterflies. 9 AM until either 5 or 6PM.

Happy Karaoke!

by PVHS02 about Happy Karaoke

Happy Karaoke is a Korean owned/run karaoke bar on Buford Highway in Atlanta. You rent rooms per person by the hour (ex $3/hr per person). They serve you small appetizers as part of the experience (celery sticks, carrots, etc). Drinks come with a bag of SunChips or Fritos or Cheetos usually. The selection is somewhat limited, but reasonably priced as long as you avoid the Asian wines which have an INSANE markup ($15 for a $7 single serving of pear wine).

Their clientele is more Asian-based so if you're not Asian, you might feel a bit out of place but still welcomed. Honestly, it doesn't matter since you're in a private room.

The Highway system

by BruceDunning

When VT fixes the upload problem for pics, then I will add some
The highways about 20 years ago seemed like a dream for visitors and locals. Belt loop 285 was one half used and you could drive around the 70+ mile perimeter swiftly, unless ice or an accident slowed it up. Running through the middle of downtown is US 20 going generally east/west, and US 75/85 going south to north and they split off in the north. Do not take these if at all possible after 3PM daily through town. That was when Atlanta was only around a couple million people; now closer to 5 million.
Traffic if murderous (or at least maddening) now, or at least a dead stop for nearly 20 miles in all directions. Use the belt loop where you can, but even that has many minutes of stopping and slamming on brakes. Hov-high occupancy-lanes are now available and that helps if you have 2 or more in the car.
