Georgia Tech
I visited Georgia Tech when I was in Atlanta as part of my college visits. It is in the top 50 colleges ranked by U.S. News. It has good engineering programs. The campus is located near downtown Atlanta.

I plan to drive THROUGH (not stopping) Atlanta in August. I really do not want to adjust my schedule too much but just HOW BAD is the traffic now at 4:30 or 5:30 PM on a Monday? Several years ago I drove through Atlanta after 6:00 PM and it was fine. If I will be sitting in a stopped car for an hour maybe I should get up extra early.
I can tell you that lately rush hour traffic has been quite a bit lighter than 'normal' thanks to the recession in the economy. Before 4:30 it should be do-able.
I don't know if you're driving E-W or N-S but sometimes driving straight thru is better than taking 285. If you have internet access on that day you can check out:

Or you can call 511 anywhere in Georgia for current traffic conditions.
THANK YOU
Given the traffic, I have found I can drive through Tenn to South Carolina and south adding only a few (30)miles to my trip. Since I don't want to leave TOO early I might just do that. I hate traffic (one reason I live where I live)

I have another tip on the Australian Bakery in East Atlanta but one of the neatest thing about it is that the owners somehow made contact with a local artist who is actually an aboriginal from Australia. They invited her to do the mural shown in the photo on the side of the restaurant. She in turn invited local residents to participate in the creation by putting their handprints on the mural as well. What a wonderful addition to this neat neighborhood.
463 Flat Shoals Road. Just east of Moreland Avenue and just north of Glenwood.
Stone Mountain Park, located in De Kalb County east of Atlanta, has a multitude of activities, including camping and shopping, in addition to either hiking the mountain or making the climb by tram. There's also an antique car museum in the park, and fireworks every night during the summer months.
If you don't mind making a train change at 5 points there is a nice shopping center right on one of the MARTA stops. The Inman Park stop on the east bound line has a nice Kroger. There are also a few decent restaurants in the Plaza as well as a bookstore (Barnes and Nobles), a Target and various other shops.
I don't know of any grocery stores within walking distance of any of the other train stops but my brother thinks that there is a Publix right across the street from the Brookhaven station. That is much further than the Inman Park station and would require you to make sure you got on the Doraville north line. But you wouldn't have to change trains if you were to go that far north.
MARTA's not a bad system; it has 38 rail stations and two rail lines (plus, of course, the comparatively immense MARTA bus network) accessible for a flat fare of $1.75. Up until April 2006, by which time MARTA will have completed its switch to a farecard system, MARTA uses tokens and quarters. The token machines (they take dollar bills and spit out tokens in exchange) are rather testy, so don't completely lose your wits if one doesn't always accept your Washington or Lincoln, as I've seen so many tourists/suburbanites do.
MARTA's been getting a bit dirtier and grimier over the years, but only in the stations. It's still never been nearly as haphazard on the inside as the New York City subway. Beware of the older trains with carpeting if you have mold allergies, though...they're as old as 27 years, and considerable mold has accumulated beneath the carpet.
If you're not in the farther-out suburbs, then I would recommend you stay off the highway if you're a visitor. It's *nuts*. MARTA works very well for many major destinations in the city.

Q: Downtown shopping? "Most of my time in Downtown Atlanta has been in/out travel for business or convention time when I'm all consumed with convention..."
A: "No, most of the shopping has moved out of Downtown, unfortunately. It's a fairly easy MARTA trip up to Buckhead or to Lenox Square though."
