Residence Inn Atlanta Downtown

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on September 10, 2013

Lovely hotel in the historic Rhodes-Haverty building, which, at the time of its construction in 1929, was the tallest building in the city, and remained so until 1954. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

As with all the downtown Atlanta hotels, there is little to no street parking. The hotel offers valet parking for $25/night. They also offer a complimentary hot, American breakfast, and free wireless internet in the public areas and in the guestrooms.

The hotel is perfectly situated for walking to the downtown attractions, including Underground Atlanta, the World of Coca-Cola, the Georgia Aquarium, is three blocks away from the Hard Rock Cafe, and only a block away from the closest MARTA station.

There is an on-site exercise room (I cannot comment on it since I did not utilize it), and it is a "pet friendly" hotel, although they charge a $100 non-refundable sanitation fee.

The staff here were very friendly and helpful - the desk clerk who checked us in at 1am was very friendly and was willing to repeat the information my brain could not retain at that time of day (OK - tell me again - what time is breakfast??). They were happy to supply maps, and give recommendations and directions for local restaurants.

Hidden fees everywhere!

So we signed up through Priceline for 2 nights. It was supposed to be $60 a night for a pet friendly room. We get there and they want to charge $100 nonrefundable pet fee and $25 a day for parking. So we ended up paying $120 for the room and $150 in hidden fees!!! The people are rude at the desk. The room was dirty. We had the do not disturb sign on the door and yet 5 different times housekeepers knocked on the door and woke us up. Worst experience I have ever had at a hotel.

Unique Quality: No pool, No restaurant.

Good Location with Good Service

Best (5.0 of 5.0 stars)

Rooms are very nice, not the newest equipped and TV's are not flat screen either, but they are clean and tidy. I liked my studio room where I lived for almost a month and a half due to work. It was on the 18th floor, overlooking downtown Atlanta, with a beautiful view. If you have a chance, try to get a room on the higher floors! Services are great with guest laundry, dry cleaning delivery service, room service, hot breakfast and social hours on workdays. They also have a small gym, "office area" and valet parking. If you stay longer, get a monthly pass in the Lanier parking garage half a block away, you pay as much money for the month as you would pay for the valet parking in 5 nights... (Valet parking is USD 19/night)
I liked staying here for some 39 nights at the end of 2007, I know it sounds like their marketing slogan, but my room was a home far away from home.

Unique Quality: This hotel has a great location! You can walk to anywhere in downtown Atlanta, you can get on foot to CNN, the Aquarium, the Georgia Congress Center, the Philips Arena or even the Georgia Dome, not to mention the downtown restaurants on or just off Peachtree street. You can also get here straight from the Airport with the MARTA for only USD 2.25 if you get off at Peachtree Center. The rooms are equipped with a small kitchen and are ideal for a long term stay, but probably also work fine for only a few nights. You can also use Gold's Gym with your roomcard, which is a huge gym about a 100 meters walk from the Hotel - if you would find the gym in the hotel too small.
The Reception Staff is exceptionally friendly and nice, don't hesitate to ask for their assistance!!
Don't forget to collect Marriott Rewards Points, where you can even choose to collect miles, like I do with my British Airways Executive Club card.

Directions: Driving South on Peachtree, pass Hard Rock Café on left and Westin on right and next to the Marta station there will be a triangle shaped intersection with a traffic light. The building "in" the triangle is the hotel, with the logo high on the wall of it.
