Visiting from South Africa, need hotel recommendation for an Expo in May at GWCC

by Gerald_D

Hi All

We are displaying products at an Expo at the GWCC in May. 3 guys about 50'ish. Will be working at GWCC during the day and need a place to sleep/eat at night. Won't be hiring a car, probably using MARTA if the Expo bus service can't reach us.

Can anyone recommend an hotel convenient to MARTA & restaurants that will not break the bank? (3 star).

Thanks in advance

Gerald

Living here I don't stay in hotels here, but several people on VT have. Just type Atlanta in the 'desitnation search' block at the top of the page and you will get a lot of recommendations.

Tried that, and that's why I came to the forum instead :-)

The VT hotel listing doesn't do a good job of telling you:
- proximity to MARTA station
- value for money
- proximity to restaurants.

(When I look at VT's hotel listing for my own city, it is quite scary how useless some of that info is. Many good hotels are simply not listed, and some dodgy ones have fantastic ratings.......)

I found this link that might help you http://www.gwcc.com/exhibitors/about_hotels.html

Have a good time in Atlanta!

If you stay anywhere near the GWCC or in the downtown area you will be near a MARTA station and there will be restaurants of every description nearby. For MARTA rail and bus service, their website has pretty good info at: www.itsmarta.com/

Travel Tips for Atlanta

Underground Atlanta- This megalithic, 12 acre underground structure in the heart of Atlanta's magalopolis was built in the 1800's and was the actual street level until urban planners effectively concreted the low lying area over. The area, like a huge mall, has the feel of bustling streets, complete
with street signs. There are over 100 restaurants, nightclubs and retail stores here. Atlanta History Center a good start out if you want
to get historical information about the city before going further. This center and museum traces atlanta history from Native Americans to the 1996 Olympics.
There are many gardens and restaurant on the grounds.

Dwarf House - Chick Fil A

by PVHS02

Dwarf House is the original home of Chick Fil A, so if you're dying to order a burger and straight fries at Chick-Fil-A, now's your chance!

Features the same menu items as a regular Chick Fil A but also contains generic diner food such as its famous Dwarf House burger and various pies you don't find on the Chick Fil A menu. Wait staff has generally been there for years and are all very friendly (especially if they know you're a tourist).

Small museum featuring pictures and the original Dwarf House door are on display by the entrance.

If you're into nightlife you'll probably end up in Buckhead. For a diversion, try Virginia Highlands or Little Five Points, but don't hang around L5P at night.
Buckhead offers the largest selection of bars within walking distance, Virginia Highlands is more relaxed, and Little Five Points is just plain different. Wear conservative clothes to Buckhead, casual clothes to Virginia Highlands, and your tattoos to Little Five Points.

Early Morning Flights out of Atlanta

by Sunshine64

One thing to be aware of if you are leaving Atlanta on an early morning (prior to 7am) flight:

The airline check-in counters open at 4:30, and gate security opens at 5:00. Self-check-in kiosk opens at 4:15.

So, even though the airlines tell you you need to be at the airport 2 hours before your flight - if your flight is at 6, you're just going to be standing around for a while. But, at least you'll be further along in the queue : )
