How many nights in Atlanta?

by Mike57

Hi

We fly into Atlanta to start a 16 day flydrive of the southern states in mid July. I'm thinking of a couple of nights in Atlanta to start the vacation - will that do the city and surrounds justice, or should I stay longer?

Any ideas of what to see would be helpful - we like tourist attractions, history, music and baseball .....

Thanks in advance!

Mike

Atlanta's a really awesome place, I spent 4-5 months there a couple years back, and over those months we visited quite a few places in the area. So I'll just list some of the things that you could check out while there.

1. Martin Luther King memorial/Sweet Auburn district
2. Inside CNN studio tour
3. Coca-Cola museum
4. Not sure if you'll be there during baseball season but there's always the Braves at Turner Field.
5. Fox Theatre (I caught Stomp! while they were in ATL)
6. High Museum of Art (from time to time they have special exhibits, it was Van Gogh when I was there)
7. Six Flags over Georgia theme park
8. Stone Mountain National Park
9. Cyclorama (Nice museum-style place with a giant cyclorama on the Civil War)
10. Centennial Olympic Park
11. Atlanta Civil War museum

Hope you have fun there! :()

I know this is an old posting, but hoping you're still planning for your July visit.
Some additional notes...
This may not be updated on some of your information, but the world of CocaCola has moved to the Centennial Olympic Park area, which is right near the Georgia Aquarium and the CNN center. I highly recommend visiting the aquarium, but book your tickets in advance online.
MARTA, Atlanta's transit authority, has a Tourist Loop bus service that is a good option for exploring the downtown sights since parking can be expensive. See www.itsmarta.com for details.
Even if you're not able to see a show at the Fox Theater, they give tours of the building which has a very interesting history.
Stone Mountain Park is about 30 minutes from downtown (you have to drive), but is great if you're interested in Southern history and culture. Not to mention, the mountain itself is quite impressive.
Definitely check into Braves baseball at Turner Field. The (Jimmy) Carter Center is also nearby, but I've never been there.
Hope this helps!

Travel Tips for Atlanta

Premier

by cobrioc

While the streets of this capital city bustle with the goings-on of government and big business, a subterranean entertainmet district thrives in underground Atlanta. A marvelous mix of old and new, the 12 acre complex retains the ambience of late nineteenth century Atlanta with original brick and terra cotta facades and cobbelestone streets.

Falcons Landing

by tafurojo

Before every Atlanta Falcons game outside the Georgia Dome is Falcons Landing where you can experience the NFL by playing some interactive games, listen to live bands, or just eat some good food. It was a very good experience before the game and it gave you something to do while you waited for kick-off.

marietta

by doug48

marietta is a suburb in the northwest corner of the atlanta urban sprawl. this charming town has a very nice town square that is lined with shops, restaurants, and bars. downtown marietta has a collection of historic buildings and homes. for those interested in civil war history marietta was the starting point of the 1862 great locomotive chase. marietta is a very nice part of the metro atlanta area to visit. marietta is located 20 miles northwest of downtown atlanta off of I-75. for more information see my marietta pages.

dancing

by doug48 about cafe tu tu tango

cafe tu tu tango is a chain restaurant/nightclub located in the buckhead area of atlanta. this interesting restaurant serves tapas. at night they offer live music and becomes more of a dance club. if you have never been to a tu tu tangos it is an interesting night spot to visit. business casual.

MARTA

by Cogee

There was never a problem to get TO Atlanta....but gooosh....AROUND! I live in a town with about 450000 ppl, public transportation is part many ppls everyday life and it works...we even take the bike! Being a bit naive I thought I'd do the exact same thing in Atlanta when moving there. Was I wrong or what?! Going by bike would have been my death!
I was lucky enough to live close to a bus stop which was regulary passed. I felt very out of place riding the bus....especially when working late, I did not always feel safe. The trains were somewhat nicer, really good when going to the airport.

I wouldn't say to anyone not to use the bus, I mean do what you can to save this world from all that pollution car drivers contribute to, but be wise doing it and don't be in a rush cus then it probably won't come!
