City Centre Accommodation

by Krumel

Hi everyone,

I have a 24-hour stopover in Atlanta in August, and was thinking of booking myself into a city centre hotel for the night, so that I can walk around town and do some sightseeing before going back to the airport in the afternoon.

Can anyone recommend a hotel in the centre of town, which isn't too expensive?

Thanks!

Birgit

Some places to try that I think are priced a bit lower (though I have no idea about quality--check reviews before booking):
Days Inn Downtown
Hampton Inn
Super 8
All are within a few blocks of GA Aquarium, World of Coke, CNN Center, etc. and you can take MARTA to and from the airport for $1.75 each way.
I don't know your budget, but most downtown hotels are well over $100 a night. Though you may get lucky and find a deal at a nicer place (especially if there are no big conventions in town).

Seeing that it's only 1 night and that I would like to be somewhere central I would pay up to €100 max but would not really like to go over that.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions, I'll check them out!

I too can recommend the Hampton Inn downtown (www.hamptoninn.hilton.com). I stayed there about 6 years ago when I was in Atlanta for a job interview. The hotel is a refurbished older building so, it has a lot of character - not just your normal American cookie-cutter bargain hotel. I lived in Atlanta for 5 1/2 years so, I know the hotel is still in a good area - although I can't really recommend venturing out too far on foot alone at night. But you can easily walk to the Georgia Aquarium, CNN Center, Peachtree Center, and the MARTA train. Have a nice trip!

Travel Tips for Atlanta

CNN Studio Tour

by frankcanfly

Atlanta is the world headquarters for the CNN cable news network. They offer a 'behind the scenes' studio tour for $8. There is no photo-taking allowed... I was 'reminded' after I snapped this photo of the news researchers....

At the top of the photo, you can see the desk where they sit in front of the cameras to talk.....

Watch the Thrashers play Hockey

by MatthewMetcalfe

If they Hockey Teams aren't on Strike, the Thrashers are a great team to see. A relatively new team, the city has really come out to see them. Also, all the transplanted northerners come out to watch their old home teams as well.

Good Tickets are usually available throughout the season (When there is one!)

Poole's BBQ for pig lovers!

by dustmon

Poole's BBQ is in East Ellijay in North Georgia up I-575 from Atlanta, and one of the better BBQ places up there. The pork sandwich comes in 2 sizes and the sauce is delicious and thick! They also have brisket (MMMMM!), beef and chicken, and ribs. The sides (BBQ beans, slaw, pot. salad, fries, rings, corn, and more) are good as well--there is inside and outside seating, and on the hill in the back is a pig-lovers dream. For dessert you can get an apple or a peach pie fresh made. You can pay $10 and have a pig sign put up with the rest with your name or a tribute for someone else. It is a hoot to visit here---Colonel Poole is sometimes there, but usually just the rest of the family. You should definitely stop here on your way up to Lake Blue Ridge area....

Places to eat and drink in Atlanta

by balfor about Virginia Highlands

Buckhead isn't too bad and there are certainly safe bars and restaurants there. If you would like to see a little bit of a different side of Atlanta, still safe but more casual and filled with everyday folks, check out either the Virginia Highlands or East Atlanta. (East Atlanta is much like the Highlands but with plenty of parking. )

Atkins Park in the Highlands is a bar with top notch food. Noche is a Tapas place with (at least they used to have) a $10 all you can eat tapas night on mondays. There are a dozen or so bars and restaurants right around the corner of Virginia and Highland (hence the Virginia Highlands). Just a few blocks south on Highland is where you will find Atkins Park, the Dark Horse, Limerick Junction and a bevy of other eateries and bars. A number of them such as 10 High, Limerick, Blind Willies, etc have live music as well.

I am not as familiar with the up and coming East Atlanta area but it is on Boulevard just on the south side of I-20. Casual

Q: Downtown shopping? "Most of my time in Downtown Atlanta has been in/out travel for business or convention time when I'm all consumed with convention..."

A: "No, most of the shopping has moved out of Downtown, unfortunately. It's a fairly easy MARTA trip up to Buckhead or to Lenox Square though."
