william bainbridge (1774-1833) was a famous american naval officer. he commanded ships in both barbary wars in the mediterranean and was the commander of the u.s.s. constitution. during the war of 1812 he sunk the h.m.s. java in the atlantic. after the war he became one of the board of navy commissioners. bainbridge georgia and several other towns in the u.s. are named after commodore bainbridge.
