Travel Tips for Dahlonega
Pan for gold like the old miners did
by cvilla007
You can tour an old gold mine and actually pan for gold. The people are very friendly, and the mine is pretty amazing. Lots of people come through here, and the guide provides lots of interesting history and folklore. These old miners were paid up to $1 a day over a hundred years ago, and you can get a sense of what it was like to work in a mine back then. They also have a gift shop. The mine is a National Historic Place.
The whole tour cost us $11 per person ($7 for children) & you get a free sample pan. It was well worth it. We had a lot of fun !
Gold, the slower pace, mountains, and tasty food

"Dahlonaga"
Gold was first discovered in the Dahlonega area in 1828, twenty years before the Gold Rush to California.
Gold can still be found there -- along with wonderful waterfalls and a relaxing pace.
Our trip included:
1. panning for gold at a local mine
2. visiting waterfalls
3. having good local bar-b-cue
and generally just relaxing!
Prior to 2006 I had never heard of this town. A television show on places you can go to find real treasure included gold in Georgia. A quick web search led me to Dahlonega.
I am SO glad I found it!
"GOLD..."
You can get a great history of the local gold rush and establishment of a U.S. Mint in this town by visiting the Gold Museum right in the center of the town. The museum was once the town hall.
"Beautiful countryside and waterfalls"
There are over 20 waterfalls in this area. Many are spectacular and are just a short drive from Dahlongega
Dahlonega: Gold Rush
by parkwoody
Dahlonega, in the northern hills of Georgia, is a delightful day's stop. It was the center of the first gold rush in the U.S., commencing in 1828. Gold was mined here until early in the twentieth century, and the town is an excellent visit for those interested in the arcana of gold mining. It is touristy, but not too touristy, and features rather inexpensive museaums and mine tours.
You also get to pan for your very own gold.
