Travel Tips for Dahlonega

Amicalola Falls State Park

by kimberbakos

This beautiful state park is somewhat close to Dahlonega. Amicalola Falls was named by the local Cherokee indians and means "tumbling waters". Although no where near the size of Niagara as for the width, it was just as awesome due to it's height (the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi) and the spectacular surroundings of the North Georgia Mountains. The 500+ steps to the bottom of the falls is quite a hike, to say nothing of coming back up, but well worth the walk. If my four and five year olds could do it, I'd say most anyone can. I can't believe I live in GA for so many years and never made it here until I came back to visit.

"Small Gold Mine Town in Wine Country!"

This is a great little town with lots of cool history, wonderful little stores to explore, restaurants & even a Gold Museum. Just a few miles out of town you can visit several vineyards for a little wine tasting or there are several wine tasting rooms in town, we like to see the vineyards and the views so off we go.

This page in under contruction, update to come soon.

"The views from Frogtown Vineyards"

This panoramic photo, three photos shot together for the full view. One of the first times I have used this feature on my camera, no tri-pod. Ckick on it for full view.

"America's First Gold Rush"

Gold was discovered in the 1830's in a small Georgia town named Dahlonega, meaning "Gold" in Cherokee. Before long, tens of thousands of prospectors moved in and sent the Cherokees to Oklahoma. But only a few people got rich, and once gold was struck in the West, Dahlonega was forgotten. Now this little town is a nice getaway from Atlanta, only a two-hour drive away. The main square has many interesting shops, a gold mine museum, several jewelers, and even a fudge store.
