dalton is located on US 41 in northwest georgia. dalton is the county seat of whitfield county georgia. the area around dalton was originally inhabited by the woodland indians. the woodland culture was replaced by the creeks and later the creeks were replaced by the cherokees. in 1838 the cherokees were removed to oklahoma. in 1847 a depot for the western & atlantic railroad was built in dalton which was the basis for the founding of the town. during the civil war the battle of rocky face ridge and the battle of dug gap was fought near dalton. during the great locomotive chase of april 12 th 1862 the hijacked steam engine the "general" passed through dalton on it's way to chattanooga. in modern times dalton is known as the "carpet capital of the world". the dalton area has over 150 carpet plants and approximately 100 retail carpet outlets. two famous residents of dalton are marla maples the former wife of donald trump and deborah norville the co-host of the televison show "inside edition".
of interest to the tourist is dalton's downtown historic district and several nearby civil war battle sites. dalton is an interesting side trip when traveling on I-75 in northwest georgia.
