Rock Eagle Mound

Everytime I'm in Eatonton, I visit Rock Eagle. I usually hike to the area, since there are tons of marked trails in the surrounding woods. If hiking is not for you, the website below provides driving directions. The website also provides a brief history of the effigy and more contact information.
The best view of Rock Eagle comes from inside the tower. The top windows are a great lookout and picture spot, though bars on the windows can be a pain.
Make sure to bring bug repellant and sunblock in the summer! Also, if you plan on hiking, wear old shoes (Georgia soil will stain them) and watch out for fire ant hills.
Rock Eagle is free and open year-round.

eatonton is the county seat of putnam county georgia. pictured is the putnam county courthouse. this beautiful neoclassical revival building was built in 1906. eatonton is home to two famous residents, alice walker and joel chandler harris. alice walker (1944-) won a pulitzer prize for her novel "the color purple". this book was made into a 1984 movie starring danny glover, whoopi goldberg, and oprah winfrey. joel chandler harris (1848-1908) wrote the uncle remus stories for the atlanta constitution. these stories became famous in 1946 when the walt disney company produced the movie "song of the south". about 8 miles north of eatonton is the rock eagle effigy. this stone likeness of an eagle is considered to be over 2,000 years old. this small georgia town has a number of attractions for the tourist.
