fitzgerald is a small market town located at the intersection of GA 107 and GA 11 in south central georgia. fitzgerald is the county seat of ben hill county georgia. fitzgerald was founded in 1895 as a community for civil war veterans both north and south. the town is named after philander h. fitzgerald who was a drummer boy in the civil war and later became a wealthy newspaper publisher. of interest to the tourist is it's interesting collection of historic buildings in the downtown historic district, the blue & grey museum, and the nearby jefferson davis capture site (see my irwinville pages for more info). for those interested in architecture and civil war history fitzgerald is worth a stop.
