It's a good idea to go to the visitors center first to get maps and things to do in the area. They are very friendly and helpful here and are happy to answer an questions. There are lots of things to do around here so if you are only there for the day pick a few good thing, if you are there for several days even better you'll have a chance to see waterfalls, vineyards, float down the Chattahoochee River and much more.
When I'm in Helen I love to walk through all the little shops that are there. Some shops have gifts that are very unique. You could spend the whole day just walking and looking! Paul and I spent our honeymoon in May 2001 in Helen. It was during the off-season, so it felt like we had the town all to ourselves!
I would not have been surprised to see someone panning for gold here as this area had a minor gold rush in the 19th Century. In fact, enough is still found to keep people interested and the dome of the Georgia Capitol Building is gilded with gold from this area (it doesn't take much). However, I don't know if the guy in the photo is looking for a particular lost item or if he is just treasure hunting. At least, I assume that what he has in his hands is a metal detector.
Go north through town and look for a fire road on the right. It is not paved, but is fairly obvious. Drive, slowly up the road until you get to a cell phone tower. Just past the tower you will see a wash off to the right. Walk down the wash to a clearing, there may be some primitive campers here. Walk to the edge and down about 6 feet to a flat stone. Sit and admire God's handywork at creating beauty. Sit quietly and listen, He may talk to you.

Unfortunatlye Alice closed in April 05. It was located out of town and I guess not enough people found it to keep it in business. I know a lot of people who will miss Alice and her restaurant!

Well that is not exactly true. You cannot get beer or wine (it is outside the city limits), but you can bring your own.
The food here is very good. They have everything from steak to seafood. It comes with two vegis and a salad.
The prices are good to. And, not being right in town, you can usually get seated and served right away. My favorite is the pork tenderloin! But, everything I have ever had is very good.
