madison is the county seat of morgan county georgia. pictured is the morgan county courthouse which was built in 1905. this neo classical revival building is one of the most beautiful courthouses in georgia. madison is known as the town that sherman refused to burn. in w.t. sherman's 1864 "march to the sea" he planned to destroy madison. a resident of madison named joshua hill knew sherman's brother and asked him to intercede in madison's behalf. as a result of this "gentleman's agreement" sherman spared madison from destruction. today we can be grateful for joshua hill's intervention. madison has a wonderful collection of antebellum and post civil war homes and buildings. for those interested in architecture and history madison is a must see spot between atlanta and augusta on I-20. madison has a number of good restaurtants and B&Bs in the historic district. a very worth while 3 mile side trip off of I-20 in north central georgia.
