milledgeville is located in central georgia at the intersection of highways GA49 and US441. milledgeville is the county seat of baldwin county georgia. milledgeville was named after govenor john milledge and was the capital of the state of georgia between 1806 and 1868. milledgeville is the home to the georgia central hospital, the state of georgia's psychiatric institution. also located in milledgeville is georgia military college and georgia state college & university. milledgeville's most famous resident was norvell (oliver) hardy of laurel & hardy comedy fame. there are numerous historical sites to visit in milledgeville especially for those interested in southern and georgia history. since milledgeville is home to two colleges it has a vibrant downtown entertainment area. milledgeville is a very interesting town to visit in central georgia.
john milledge (1757-1818) was a famous american solder and politician. milledge fought in revolutionary war and in 1792 was elected a u.s. representative for the state of georgia. in 1801 he founded the university of georgia and the city of athens. in 1802 milledge was elected governor of georgia. in 1806 milledge became a u. s. senator.
