Clayton College and State University
"My Connection With Clayton State"
Over the last year I've spent some time getting to know some good people at Clayton College and State University in Morrow, GA. Clayton State is home to Spivey Hall, a truly excellent recital hall which has gained international fame in recent years for its superb acoustic and world-class programming. Concerts from Spivey Hall are often featured on NPR's "Performance Today." Before he died last year, my Uncle Bill was a frequent attender of concerts at Spivey, and he was impressed by the facility itself and by the College which sponsors it. Although he himself was not a graduate of the college, in his will he left Clayton State his entire collection of classical music and opera CDs - over 4000 discs! The people at the college have been very enthusiastic about the bequest, and over the last 12 months have been diligently sorting through the collection and cataloging it. My Uncle Bill will be glad to know that the students at Clayton State will be enjoying and learning from his music collection for years to come.
"Swan Lake"
Clayton State has a beautiful campus, the centerpiece of which is the aptly named "Swan Lake". Both Spivey Hall and the college library - where his music college will be housed - overlook the lake. After his cremation, my uncle's ashes were scattered on the shores of the lake - I think a fitting place for a man who loved both music and nature.
My mother and I were back in Morrow on the Clayton State campus this past May. They told us that the swans have an egg in their nest - and are taking turns guarding it. Apparently, swans are one species where males and females share equally in the responsibility for taking care of the young - both before and after birth. What a concept!
