newnan is the county seat of coweta county georgia. newnan was established in 1823 and was named after general daniel newnan. newnan is located at the intersection of US 27ALT and SR 34 about four miles north of I-85. newnan was a wealthy cotton market town before and after the civil war. newnan was designated as a confederate hospital town during the civil war and was by passed by union general w.t. sherman. as a result of this decison newnan has the best collection of antebellum homes in the state of georgia. newnan received some fame as the location of the movie "murder in coweta county" about a 1948 trial that was held there. newnan was home to the country singer alan jackson and the southern humorist lewis grizzard. of interest to the tourist is it's downtown historic district and it's collection of beautiful antebellum and victorian homes. for those interested in architecture and history newnan is worth a visit.
