roswell is located in northern fulton county and is a affluent suburb of atlanta. in the 1830's roswell king visited the area and decided to build a cotton mill near modern day downtown roswell. he brought 36 plantation slaves from his coastal plantation and another 42 skilled carpenter slaves from savannah to build the mill. when the mill was completed it was the largest cotton mill in north georgia. after the mill was built king's son barrington king and archibald smith established plantations in the area. the town of roswell was incorporated in 1854. during the atlanta campaign union general kenner garrard captured roswell and burned king's mill. many of king's slaves fled and his white workers were sent north. general garrard spared the towns homes and churches which was an uncommon practice by william t sherman's generals. for those interested in antebellum architecture we can be gratefull today for garrard's decision not to burn the town. after the war barrington king rebuilt the mill but the economy of roswell did not recover until the turn of the 20 th century.
roswell has much to offer the tourist that is interested in architecture and history. the town has scores of interesting antebellum homes and buildings. roswell also has a very good selection of shops. restaurants, and bars. roswell is a very worth while place to visit when in the atlanta area.
