I first ate at Mudcat Charlies in 1996 and found it to be a friendly and relaxing place. The seafood was great and so were the people that worked there. I believe at the time there were not many African Americans that ventured into the spot but my fiance and myself were treated with respect and had a great time conversing with the staff. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to enjoy great food, atmosphere and passing the time away watching the boats, water and beautiful sunsets.

st. simons island is part of the south georgia coast known as the golden isles. this island has much to offer tourists in terms of history and scenic beauty. in the 17th century st. simons island was part of spanish florida. in 1680 the british founded the colony of south carolina and began raids on spanish florida. in 1702 james moore drove the spanish out of the st. simons island. in 1736 general james oglethorpe built fort frederica on st. simons island to protect the georgia colony from spanish attack. in 1742 the battle of bloody marsh was fought on st. simons between the british and the spainards. this british victory ended spanish incursions into georgia. during the revoluntary war the frederica naval action was fought near st. simons in 1778. this battle was an important victory for the colonists. during the colonial era and up to the mid 20th century st. simons was known world wide for it's cultivation of sea island cotton. this long staple cotton is considered one of the best varieties of cotton in the world. in 1942 during WWII the german submarine U-123 sunk two american freighters off the coast of st. simons island. today st. simons island is a summer resort which offers a beautiful beach, golf courses, and ocean front resort hotels. st. simons island is a very nice place to visit in southeast georgia.
