Bus Travel Safe?
by Milaandra
We're on an extreme budget, so we're staying at a budget chain hotel on Al Henderson. To avoid parking problems, we figured we would just take the looooong bus ride to downtown, as the bus stops right at the hotel.
Is this safe? (My 36 year old husband and my...um...er...slightly older self)
We might hit one or two of the jazz/blues lounges...like the one in the Olde Pink House and/or Hannah's and/or Savannah Blues. For that we would drive. Is that safe?

It will take you alittle more than an hour by city bus to downtown if there is one(transfers to). If the hotel provides a shuttle it would be 30 minutes. I would suggest parking at the visitors center on MLK BLVD. Parking garages run from 5 to 10 dolloars a day.
Travel Tips for Savannah
Chippewa Square~ Forest Gump's bench
by Pawtuxet
As I mention elsewhere the city seems to identify its neighborhoods by which square is the closest to it. In this case, we found several interesting shops and cafes near the Chippewa Square. There were coffee house frequented by lots of college kids, a cigar store, and I enjoyed the Savannah Art Works... where I found yet another pair of earrings to add to my vast collection. Everything was made by local artists... of which there are a zillion because of the art and design school which dominates the district.
This is the neighborhhod where you would find the little British Pub named Six Pence. (see my restaurant tips)
Incidentally, Chippewa Square is where Forrest Gump's bench was placed during the filming of the popular movie by the same name.
Drinking...
by jenp057
People in Savannah love to drink - most bars stay open 'til at least 12 a, Sun. - Thurs. and 3 a, on Fri. & Sat.
Go on - walk outside with an an alcoholic drink in a plastic cup (16 oz.)! It's legal :)

Afternoon tea, southern style, at the Gryphon
by jbel2879
The Gryphon Tea Room is right in the heart of downtown Savannah, on the edge of some cute square (I'm terrible with names). Regardless, it's on Bull Street. The visit is worth it for the decor alone. Fabulous tiffany lamps, brass and oak bar fixtures, a huge glass ceiling panels - it's absolutely gorgeous. They have a sizable collection of different teas, and will just brew you a pot or will do the whole enchilada of afternoon tea. It was too hot for coddled cream and such so I just got a pot and my friend got a cool drink.
The tea was quite good and well brewed. The service was a little snippy. Just ignore them, it adds to the ambience.
TIP: walk around the area taking in the townhouse architecture to build up your appetite for smoky seductive tea. Savannah is so cool.
River St in Savannah buzzes at...
by littlebush
River St in Savannah buzzes at night at the weekend. Savannah has a high student population with the nearby University so at the weekends its packed with young 'up for it' people! Check out 'Wet Willies', 'The bar', 'The Zoo', 'Deja Groove'.
Where the Elite Eat in Thier Barefeet
by myway5510 about Crab Shack
Heading out of Savannah and towards the beaches is the world famous Crab Shack. This resturant looks like something out of an old south movie, right on the water and almost in ruins. The food is wonderful and the service friendly. Definitely don't miss this one!
Please please please do not confuse with the chain Joe's Crab Shack Crabs of course!
