With so much tree cover over the city, I imagine Tybee Island is a real treat for the people of Savannah. It's about a 20 minute drive outside the city...lots of summer homes, mud flats, and an entertainment strip...loads of hotels and motels.... typical summer playground.
The part we found the best was the beach. It's a beautiful stretch of sugary sand with dunes, a pavillion, a board walk and plenty of room to stretch out or skip through the water.
Unfortunately January isn't the best time to visit. Hot weather probably brings a zillion tourists and a lot of partying all over the island.
The sunset was excellent.
There is also a Tybee Island Lighthouse Station & Tybee Museum which might be interesting to see. We didn't take the time for it... the weather didn't lend itself to summertime actiivities.
The street in the Historic...
The street in the Historic District of Savannah are very clean, well maintained and green. One of the great things about Savannah is that you can see rich people walking their dogs out at the many squares, while there are some poor kids playing in the fountain water at the square, it does not seem to bother the rich folks.
It is HOT in the South!
whatever isn't an inconvenience for you Savannah is very humid from February to October..If it is 80 f in the daytime- it may be 78 f that night- so bring light dresses and shorts and flip flops for day & evening.Men may be stifled in suits at night- khakis and a short sleeve button up shirt are OK. BUG SPRAY!!!!!
trust me- if you are walking at all, you will need it. Sunglasses and sun screen.

Old Savannah Tours
We thought that it was important to become familiar with Savannah before we went out on our own...we needed an overview. Am I ever glad that we decided to take a tour. We learned so much about the history, the culture, the people, locations, little-known places to see, great restaurants, etc.
Our overview tour was with Old Savannah Tours & Transportation which is locally owned and operated. They have been in business for over twenty years and have experienced, well-informed tour guides. In addition, they offer both overview and on-off tours.
We took the Overview Tour which gave us the history of two and one half centuries (Early Colonial, Civil War, Reconstruction up to Present Times). We were able to see from the outside many mansions, almost all of the squares, the riverfront, the the City Market.
We were able to ask questions, and our guide answered all the many questions asked. Our tour lasted about 90 minutes. We were in an Open Air Trolley. They also have Mini-Buses and Limousines.
