What to do?
by extex
I want to surprise a friend (who lives on Tybee) and take her out for a day in or around Savannah. She lives there, been there, done it all. Any suggestions? Once, I got a limo in Charleston who took us to a winery and the auto racing track and we saw the city by day. Is that recommended in Savannah? If so, where to stop?

I'm not sure what your interests are, but a few of my favorite activities in Savannah are culinary related. There is a really good Foody Tour for about $50 and it runs 3 hours and stops at several local/hidden gems (along with a couple more mainstream/popular places, i.e. Paula Deen's Lady & Sons)I've done the tour 3 times, and it's been a blast every time. Most of the places you are able to meet the owners/managers and sample some of their favorites, so you get an insider's guide which you wouldn't normally have on your own. They have a walking and a bus version. I also would recommend a cooking class at the Mansion on Forsyth Park (which is also a fabulous hotel if you need one!....it's not located in the middle of everything, but it's within easy walking distance) I think the classes run around $100, but it was a great experience and worth the money, especially if you enjoy culinary adventures. If you are interested in a girls spa experience, Savannah Day Spa on Oglethorpe is fantastic...I've had a sugar body scrub, massage and facial there, and it was in a beautiful, tranquil, relaxing setting and the prices were very reasonable.
If you wanted to go out of the Savannah area, Hilton Head is only about 50 or 60 miles north, and Kiawah Island is about 3 hours north of Tybee. Kiawah is one of my favorite places to go....great golf, beach, biking, spa, nature, etc., but it can be a bit pricey depending on what time of year you go. I live in Detroit, but visit Savannah/Charleston about 3 times a year.....I love it there! Have fun!!

Fabulous Oakey Moss

I don't really have a 'favorite' thing about Savannah. I really don't like the place. I go because I have to. I don't find the people especially friendly, it's too hot, it's rainy, touristy and getting around is a nightmare. Being with the ladies of Zona Rosa naturally.
Greene Square...named for a Rhode Islander!!
by Pawtuxet
Named in honor of General Nathaniel Greene, an aide to General George Washington during the Revolutionary War, Greene Square is one of the most beautiful squares in Savannah.
Located in one of the oldest sections of the neighborhood... there are a number of tiny 1700's houses obviously owned by the less wealthy in the early years of the city. Because of their size, they don't accomodate today's living standards very well, so I suspect that is the reason most of them are not yet restored. They are marked with plaques, however, so I am hopeful that someone will realize the value of their history and care for them. One of them had a building permit posted which means they are planning to work on it soon.
In another tip, I'll give an example of a little house restored.
Mosquito Repellent or Suffer!
by steph4867
Comfy walking shoes... Savannah is mostly flat and easy on your feet, but you will be walking a lot. And if you stick to the Historic District and Riverfront, the cobblestones will wear out your shins. Plenty of film!!! Absolutely do not forget your Bug Spray - I was the main course for those blood suckers the entire weekend... came home one great big mosquito bite.
Ft. Pulaski
by Tom_Fields
This old fort was built starting in 1808, to protect Savannah from naval attack. It saw action in the War of 1812, and during the Civil War. The Union Navy never made it past this fort. But in 1865, during his March to the Sea, General Sherman finally took Savannah, and its forts. Ft. Pulaski was decommissioned in 1905.
Take a romantic carraige ride
by tpangelinan
Go take a romantic carriage ride around old historic Savaanah, you won't ever forget it! This state is full of romance and history. It's a nice slow ride in a pretty white carriage. For more information check the local visitors center.
