riverview?

by darlene55

From your room at the hampton Inn do you have a nice view of the river?

Re: riverview?

by mccalpin

I can only answer from the point of view of the Holiday Inn Express, which is, I believe, across the street (to the west) from the Hampton Inn.

The terrain is this: the hotels are on the south side of Bay Street, which runs east-west along the high ground above the river. On the north side of Bay Street are trees and low buildings (2 story?), then the ground drops off rapidly to nearly river level, and there is another street at that level, where there are tourist shops and whatnot. Then the river is slightly below that.

So you won't be able to see much of the river unless you are on one of the higher floors in the hotel AND you are facing north...if you are facing south (assuming the Hampton Inn has south facing rooms) then you would be facing the historic district (trees and houses) (or in the case of the Holiday Inn Express, the parking garage).

We were on the 7th floor of the Holiday Inn Express, and we could see the convention center on the far side of the river, boats in the water, and the like. We could not really see the shops on the riverfront on our side, because they are below the 2 story buildings on the north side of Bay Street.

In short, the hotel is not ON the river, it is a short distance away, but if you are high enough you should be able to see the river and some traffic on it...at least you can from the hotel across the street ;-)

Keep in mind that there are TWO Hampton Inns in Savannah, one at 201 E. Bay Street, which is closest to the River and more centrally located, and then the H.I. & Suites on Martin Luther King, which is close to the Visitor's Center and the railroad museum but on the very Western edge of the Histoical District.
The property on Bay St has very rooms overlooking Bay St and, in turn, over the river. The best hotel for a river view is the Hyatt.

Travel Tips for Savannah

Trolley Tours

by grandmaR

Originally, I intended to take the Gray Line tour, which is one of several available. They advertise that tours depart every 30 minutes from the Visitor's Center and Gray Line central (free parking). The Trolley Tour is a comprehensive, fully narrated tour uninterrupted by trolley stops. Enjoy a 75-minute journey through 260 years of Savannah's history, homes and haunts with unlimited on and off privileges at 12 trolley shuttle stops within the Historic District.

In the end, I switched to Old Savannah Tours, and was very happy with them.

Note in the photo - white bumps in the street around the stop sign which appears to be farther out into the street than usual In addition to Grayline and Old Savannah, possible tours include:

Visit Fort Jackson

by seagoingJLW

This is the oldest standing fort in Georgia. Original begun in 1808 it was used during the War of 1812.

After being enlarged between 1845 and 1860 it served as headquarters for the Confederate river defenses during the Civil War. It is located at #1 Fort Jackson Road.

Packing List

A copy of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, by John Berendt.
The 1994 best-seller set in Savannah is a good read. If you don't want to pack it, it's not a problem. It will be in the store window of every bookstore in town. As a matter of fact, locals really love this book and why not? Tourism increased by 46% after its release! In town, it's simply known as The Book.

Universe Trading Co.

by cfwestbe

If you want antiques and other old stuff, head to Universe Trading Co. and check out the deals. Not all are antiques, but if you look you can find real gems of a deal.

Located at 27 Montgomery Street, 1 block west of the City Market in historic downtown Savannah!

Savannah is a 4 hour ride from...

by Arubasun.

Savannah is a 4 hour ride from Atlanta Georgia. As soon as you are out of Metro Atlanta the 6 lane highway will change into a very unbussy 2 lane highway heading towards Savannah. Another way in getting to Savannah is by air. There are daily direct flights from Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport to Savannah. The flight duration will take 15 to 20 minutes depending on the type of aircraft you are flying.
