my advice - don't stay at the marshall house
by A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at The Marshall House for one night in August, 2004 on our way to Charleston. The room was very small, the hallway very loud. In fact, someone was rattling our door knob in the middle of the night (obviously they had the wrong room). But, the kicker was when the valet brought the car around for us to leave. It had a big scratch on the back bumper. The police had to be called and a report filed. And guess what, I have had to continually call them and pursue this matter. In fact, they went so far as to give me the number of the insurance company so that I could follow up. It has been three months and I have yet to receive any information. The staff and the management have not been helpful or apologetic. I have not even received a letter from them expressing an apology for the problem. I think they have handled this matter in a very unprofessional way and I would suggest that you find another place to stay. Just in case you have a problem you don't want to have to deal with this management as there will never be a resolution. Beware........

The Marshall House was truely a wonderful experience. The service was excellant and we were treated like a king and queen. The rooms are so cozy and wonderfully decorated. Everything is in walking distance. Definitely want to go back!
Wonderful Place to Stay!

My husband and I spent the weekend after Thanksgiving at the Marshall House. It was a great place to stay while in Savannah. The hotel feels more like a B&B or Inn rather than a hotel. The rooms are small, but unless you spend all of your time in the room, it won't make a bit of difference! The floors do squeak, but they appear to be the original wood plank floors from many years ago, so they are bound to squeak. Would definitely stay here again!
I loved this place

I can't express how nice this place was. We spent our honeymoon on the 6-9th of feb. in the marshall house. We loved this place. The staff was so helpfull, and would always greet us and smile when we walked by. The location is second to none, right in the middle of everything. The room was clean and beautiful. We loved it and will definately stay again, when we return to Savannah.
Great but a little noisy

We just stayed at the Marshall House for one night. It was beautiful, room was large, beds comfortable. Complimentary breakfast was served in a beautiful atrium room. A little noisy though - great old wood floors make a little noise! We have children though - if you are just a child-free couple, the place is gorgeous and very accomodating.

Just returned from three nights at the Marshall House and thought we'd share our opinions. We were a bit surprised by the negative comments posted here since our experience was an overall great one. Southern hospitality was evident as soon as we checked in. The valet, doorman, clerk, staff and especially the concierge were nothing but polite and helpful throughout our stay. The concierge (I think his name was Greg) will help you with ANYTHING and answer any questions you have.
The "hotel" was located in a great area, convenient to all (historic Savannah isnt that big anyway...everything is within walking distance). Its not in a "bad" neighborhood at all...the street is a bit more commercialized (Gap, Banana Republic, Starbucks) than where the B&B's are (which again is two blocks away) but once inside the Marshall House that all disappears. Despite it being listed as a hotel it has the feel and look of a big B&B. We had a queen room with access to the veranda (which i recommend). The room was very big with very high ceilings, fireplace, mini fridge, etc. The bathroom was big also (no tub but who cares). The veranda was accessible only to a few rooms and you got to it by stepping out the windows (which are virtually floor to ceiling). Outside there were rocking chairs and tables. This was def. a nice feature and didn't cost THAT much more than a regular queen room.
The bar was very nice and the art inside is beautiful. The "sitting area" and lobby are really pretty too...looks ALOT bigger online but it's a decent size. The breakfast was your run of the mill continental breakfast...nothing to write home about. We went to Clarys (a few blocks away) for a GREAT breakfast. We didnt eat at the hotel restaurant but did order dessert from it one night at the bar (yummy).
Overall, we really did love the hotel. Here's just a few MINOR pet peeves we had....
1) IT WAS HOT (not the hotels fault obviously and thats what we get for going in July...just had to share that
2) The front desk NEVER answered the phone when we called down from the room (and we called alot)
3) The coffee in the room was just soooo bad...go to starbucks
These obviously aren't anything major and just goes to show that the service, hotel, room and staff were wonderful and we'd highly recommend staying at the Marshall House.
p.s. If you're going to Savannah for a few days take a day trip to Tybee Island and go on a dolphin tour and eat at the Crab Shack...very fun!
Was just ok

We just stayed at the Marshall House this past holiday Thanksgiving and the night after and will say it was a nice place but we would probably not stay there again. Main reason was the noise level. We were awakened many times from the footsteps on the wooden floors and then they drop (from 4 ft high) the newspaper at your door at 3:30 in the AM and you will hear everyone of them as they drop them down the hall. If you go make sure your room is on the 4th floor. The place is charming and elegant but not cheap either. We did not eat dinner there but instead ate at Elizabeths on 37th street which is one of the best meals we have ever eaten (not cheap either !).
Great place to stay!

I recently spent one nite at Marshall House. I tried to talk my boyfriend out of it due to some of the reviews that I had read and I'm glad that I didn't. The service from the time that we got out of the car to checking out was excellent. The hotel has a nice historical feel and we found our room to be clean and comfy. The only warning I have to others are the rooms are very small so don't expect alot of space but it provided us with everything that we needed for a nights stay. We also ate dinner at the restaurant on site. They have a beautiful indoor atrium which gives a very romantic atmosphere and the service was great but the food is a little "different" so beware for example, I ordered the ceasar salad with giant prawns and I was served 2 heads of grilled romaine lettuce with 1 prawn on top. For the price I would probably recommend eating at one of the other restaurants that the city has to offer. The best part of the stay was George are porter. He's worked there since 1941 and has great stories to share, so make sure you get a chance to talk with him.
Just wonderful

This hotel is wonderful. We had the 'Juliette Gordon Low Suite' and it was beautiful.
The staff were excellent, and the free breakfast was great as well.
There were only 2 few pet peeves we had:
The noisy AC unit
Some air compressor or something below the room turning on and off all night.

Marshall House-now a restaurant, but still haunted

Savannah- B&B recommendation needed
by kirsten67
I will be traveling to Savannah in August with my 7 yr old daughter. We would like to stay at a B&B. I have been doing some research and know that some do allow children. So far, we have found the Hamilton Turner Inn, Savannah B&B, Azalea Inn.
I would like to stay somewhere that is fairly centrally located within the historic district, so it is easy to walk to the must sees. Under $200 or close to it per night would be great.
Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!
Kirsten
