Hiking Stone mountain
by goingsolo
There is a trail near Confederate Hall which leads to the top of Stone Mountain. The trail is easy to follow as there are yellow markings on the ground to giude you. Its a pretty easy walk with only a few steep areas. At the steepest point, handrails are provided to make it easier.
The sign gives you some general guidelines and information which is pretty basic. Bascially, wear closed shoes and watch out for lightning.
The best part about the walk is enjoying the views along the way and the great vantage point at the top. If you want to see some photos from the walk and the view of the North Georgia mountains, check out my travelogue.

I was on top of Stone Mountain and also on top of the World after winning a Major Swim Event at the University of Georgia.
I didn't get a picture of the front of the mountain which show three heroes of the Civil War.
Stone Mountain Park is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the country. The famous relief carving is the largest in the world carved into the world's largest mass of exposed granite. Often referred to as "the 8th wonder of the world," the carving depicts three heroes of the Civil War, President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee, and Lt. General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. The park is more than just the monument. It aslo includes 3,200 acres of breathtaking scenery, pristine lakes, forestland, spectacular flora and miles of nature trails.
Stone Mountain Park is located only 16 miles east of downtown Atlanta off U.S. Highway 78. Park Gates are open daily from 6 AM until midnight.
