tifton is the county seat of tift county georgia. tifton was founded by captain henry harding tift. tift moved to the tift county area from mystic connecticut to harvest lumber and to build a saw mill. tift county is named after nelson tift who was henry tift's uncle. tifton is home to abraham baldwin agriculural college which is famous for it's developement of golf course turf grass. of interest to tourists is the georgia agrirama museum and tifton's historic district. tifton is an interesting side trip off of I-75.
henry tift (1841-1922) was a businessman and real estate developer who had a significant impact on the economy of south central georgia. in the 1860's tift was a steamboat engineer on a shipping line between new york and the gulf coast. in 1870 he became the general manager of a manufacturing firm owned by his uncles asa and nelson tift in albany georgia. in 1872 henry tift bought a large tract of pine forest in barriens county. tift established a saw mill and turpentine operation. later he established cotton, corn, tobacco and pecan farms on the harvested timber land. when the georgia southern and florida railway intersected the brunswick and western railway tift's settlement became a boom town. the town of tifton was incorporated in 1890.
