washington is the county seat of wilkes county georgia. pictured is the interesting richardson romanesque 1904 wilkes county courthouse. washington is the first town in the nation to be named after president george washington. during the revolutionary war the battle of kettle creek was fought near washington. on april 3rd 1865 the confederacy was dissolved at the heard house in washington. jefferson davis stopped in washington in his flight from union troops. on may 10th 1865 he was captured in irwinville georgia (see my irwinville page for more info). washington is famous for it's collection of over 70 restored colonial, antebellum, and victorian homes. in downtown washington there are a number of restaurants, bars, and stores. a very historic and beautiful place to visit in northeast georgia.
