Nice little B&B in a very interesting location

We wanted to stay in Captain Cook to see a more local part of the Big Island and happened across the South Kona Hideaway randomly. We were not disappointed. Its pretty off the beaten path and you definitely need a rental car if you'd like to stay here, but its a great option if you'd like to stay in a quaint "old hawaii" area. The hosts are very friendly, helfpul and interesting. They used to own a bakery in Santa Barbara, California and every morning you wake up to a basket with fresh local fruit, eggs (from their own chickens) and amazing pastries (ask for the scones... OMG they're good). There's some very interesting local restaurants within a short drive and there's some great sites nearby (Kealekekua Bay, Captain Cook Monument, the Painted Church, the Place of Refuge, etc). There's two suites, attached to the owner's house, but each suite has a separate entrance, and the area is surrounded with beautiful trees, flowers and plants. We stayed upstairs, a 1 bedroom suite that has a kitchenette, separate living area with a day bay, table and chairs and sofa. The place was nicely furnished, had an updated bathroom and a nice sized sitting area/living room where you could easily sleep a couple on the day bed (a great place to snooze or read a book with the afternoon breezes) and a great view.

The hosts are great - they are extremely helpful when needed or asked and will give you tips for local restaurants, but give you plenty of space and privacy if you don't feel like interacting. Parents with young children - ask them about the kid's beach near the Place of Refuge (perfect spot to take our 2 year old).

Unique Quality: Peaceful, rural setting. Homemade scones in the morning (I'm not kidding, they're that good).
