Hilo Bay Hostel
Hilo Hostel was one of the best locations I have ever stayed at. The man who ran the hostel, Andy, was a fantastic host and even offered to let me stay for free if I ran out of money. They have 2 showers for each bathroom (male, female) and they put a lot of effort into upkeep and make everyone as comfortable as they can, I made a variety of friends at the hostel and would love to return there in the future.
Unique Quality: The view is actually of the city streets but they have a storage locker to put your bags, lockers you can also purchase for a few dollars for extra space. They have a full kitchen and allow any guests to use it, they also have a coin operated washer and dryer. Andy also has an older gentlemen by the name of Robert who lives in the back of the hostel and he is very friendly and likes to make all the guests feel at home. We had some great conversations while smoking cigarettes outside of the hostel.

Heart of Hilo
Hilo Bay Hostel first struck me as a youth facility. While that's true, it's also a great place for budget travelers. The building itself is very old, one of the oldest in Hilo. Downtown Hilo has a European feel especially along Front Street. The hostel looks to be a nice facility with charm!

$65 after tax for one. Not bad!!!
Unique Quality: VERY local style. Clean and quaint. BEATS HILO SEASIDE hands down!!! And I like it better than the Naniloa, it's large scale hotel neighbor.
