Magnificent home and bundles of TLC

My husband and I spent 2 delightful nights at the Shipman home. What an exquisite painted lady she is.
Barbara and Gary so graciously shared their insight on the best of the Best on the Big Island. We were so impressed with the sights they recommeded that we stayed another night.
The continential breakfast was like none I've ever experienced, it included this delicious homemade macadamia nut granola, homemade breads and a special recipe of Lilikoi Butter, the fruit platter is prepared beautifully and is grown on the grounds along with beautiful flowers and plants. This home is a compelling reason to visit Hilo.
Don't Miss This Gem!

What a wonderful place! Barbara and Gary welcomed us in and our only regret was that we could only stay one night. The setting is incredibly peaceful and very convenient to all of Hilo. The breakfast was the best we encountered in Hawaii with a huge platter of fresh fruit from the property, homemade granola, fresh juices, and the list goes on! I would highly recommend a stay at the Shipman House!
awesome in every way

You'll gasp as you get your first glimpse if you like old houses....
The hospitality is stellar, and the upstairs rooms are terrific.
I don't know why anyone who could afford to stay every night in $225 places
would ever stay anywhere else no matter HOW luxurious. this is THE place to be.
We found Hilo to be the best area of the island and particularly loved the Abundant Life
natural food store downtown for lunches and supplies. Hilo Bay Cafe was an _awesome_ dinner experience especially when compared with the general level of Hawaii food (we don't eat fish or spam).
Our favorite night of our 14 day trip for my husband and I as well as for my mom and her sweetheart. three cheers for shipman house!
Beautiful&Elegant Shipman House

My new bride and I checked into Shipman House after our wedding in Liliuokalani Park in Hilo. The house is elegant, perched above Wailuku River, actually on an island formed by two arms of the river. Our room looked through the trees to Hilo Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Breakfast was stunning, with island fruits and locally grown coffee. This is surely the most romantic place for a honeymoon in Hawaii.
excellent bed and breakfast

The Shipman House is lovely. The house and the grounds make it easy to "go back in time" to Hawaii a hundred years ago. Both Barbara and Gary are very gracious and quite informative in answering questions about the area.
I typically do not like staying in bed and breakfasts, but the Shipman house is a major exception. The three days I stayed there were wonderful.
Best B&B of all time
by TripAdvisor Member booflops
Staying in the Shipman House was like a dream. First, the house is massive and historic, with museum quality furniture all throughout the rooms. It's open and airy, with a cool breeze that comes in the open windows and French doors. Second, the garden/lawn area is huge and enchanting, with lush tropical trees and fragrant flowers. The crickets and tree frogs put on a surreal and hypnotic concert at night--the kind people buy discs of. The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. Perhaps most importantly, the owners Barbara and Gary are warm and thoughtful people, and totally relaxed and peaceful. They offer a breakfast with a huge spread of exotic fruits picked from their own garden and orchid, as well as home-made granola, butter, and breads. You can eat outside on the mansion's wrap-around porch with a view on the ocean, talking with Barbara and Gary or with other guests. It was truly the greatest.

Lovely Stay in Elegant, Historic Surroundings
by TripAdvisor Member Moghli
A stay at the Shipman House Bed and Breakfast is a rare treat and an opportunity to experience gracious living in a historic atmosphere in Hilo. The Shipman House is a late 19th-century mansion, faithfully restored to its early grandeur. As B&B guests, we stayed in three different rooms over the course of 2 weeks, and enjoyed the refined beauty of each one. Beyond the remarkable architecture and period furnishings of the Shipman House, our visit was made all the more memorable by our wonderful hosts, Barbara and Gary Andersen, who provided warm hospitality and a beautiful breakfast with relaxed calm. Harvested from the property's remarkable grounds, a wide array of tropical fruits graced the breakfast table, along with homemade baked goods and freshly blended fruit smoothies. With a view of the ocean, the elegant porch provided a place for outdoor breakfasts and for hula lessons on weekday evenings. If you're looking for a place of quiet beauty with a historic, elegant atmosphere, a visit to the Shipman House Bed and Breakfast will make your trip to the Big Island all the more special.
Heaven in Hiilo

The hosts, Barbara and Gary, provided a room, a home, and a setting beyond our imagination. The beautifully restored home of Barbara'a great-grandparents, Shipman House is a Victorian beauty in a tropical paradise. At breakfast, the fruit, jam, and spreads, which come from the property (fruit picked that morning) complement the home baked goods. Try a Shipman House Sunrise (non-alcoholic) to start the day. Revel in the hosts' knowledge of old Hawaii as well as suggested activities for the day. I'd say I felt at home, but I really felt royal!
Cozy and elegant

Simple but elegant accommodations, wonderful breakfast! A great place to get away from the rat race, but still be close to civilization.
