More about The Bay House
beatifully decorated, very clean and wonderful view
This place is located right on the bay. The view is outstanding. The rooms are beatifully decorated and clean. The owners allow you to have a lot of privacy. Breakfast is very light but good. Bring an umbrella as it does rain in Hilo. The waterfalls are wonderful in the rain if you have an umbrella!
Cozy and inviting retreat
Our stay at the Bay House over the Easter weekend topped off our fabulous trip to the Big Island. Tina and her wonderful kids arranged for a special Easter egg hunt for our two-year-old daughter and a couple of other little guests.
Upon our arrival, Tina greeted us, showed us to our room and offered us free reign of the shared kitchen, which included a refrigerator full of drinks (including milk and freshly-made juice!), snack items and a microwave. This was handy because we were able to prepare a nice bottle of warm bedtime milk for our daughter (you can't do that at most other places!) There is also a "mini-library" full of interest and travel books including copies of the indispensible "Big Island Revealed".
The Bay House is new (hardwood flooring throughout), the rooms are very clean and the attention to detail in both design/decor and amenities (night lights, Dixie cups, extra rolls of toilet paper, etc.) clearly shows that Tina goes to great lengths to ensure a comfortable stay. We stayed in the Palm Room and although it has huge windows, it is completely private with a view of Hilo Bay from one window and a view of tropical foliage from another.
Breakfast on our private patio kicked off a great start to the day. We will definitely be returning to The Bay House on our next return to the beautiful Big Island. Mahalo!
Hilo Bay House - a Great Place for a Getaway
A VERY enjoyable experience. Lovely room overlooking the bay. Expanded continental breakfast hit the spot. Helpful and caring hosts made it one of our most memorable B & B experiences. We've already booked for Jan '06.
Best comfort and hospiality any B & B can offer
We truly enjoyed our stay at the Bay House and have already booked a future trip there. This is one of the nicest, most comfortable places we have had the privilege of staying. It is quiet, with the sound of the ocean and most of all, it is extremely clean. It is also so refreshing that it is a nonsmoking facility. The location is perfect for the Hilo area within walking distance to downtown, shops and restaurants. Tina, the innkeeper, is delightful and made us feel right at home. You won't find a nicer B & B at any price than the Bay House. You won't be disappointed!
My husband and I just returned from our stay at the Bay House in Hilo. We are not normally B&B stayers - we usually enjoy the privacy of a hotel, but the Bay House was wonderful. With different schedules, we rarely saw the innkeeper, but she seemed pleasant. The place was very clean and our room - the Bay Room - was very well decorated and very spacious. We loved the wood floors. The view from the lanai was gorgeous and we enjoyed falling asleep to the sound of ocean waves. There is no A/C, but that appears to be typical in Hawaii. We appreciated the library of books and took advantage of the Big Island Revealed. Breakfast was sparse, but for the price it was well worth it. Our only real complaint was that we couldn't "connect" with the town of Hilo. It was just not our favorite town among those we visited in Hawaii. However, it is a great location for visiting the volcanoes, as I couldn't imagine having to drive to the west side of the island after a day there. For those visiting Hilo or the volcanoes, I would definitely recommend this place.
Hospitality and Friendliness
Unfortunately we only stayed for 3 nights at the Bay House. We could only catch a glimpse of the friendliness and hospitality the hosts have to offer.
They provided us with good travel-advice and tips for dining and sightseing, all of which turned out to be great hints for an unforgettable stay.
It certainly is a recommendable place to stay if you plan to visit Hilo.
....And the friendliness didn't even stop after we left. I forgot my cell-phone before departing to Maui. A phone call to the Bay House and 2 working days later i had my phone in my hands again!! Thanks again!!
Of course we enjoyed the splendid breakfast and the comfy rooms as well!
The Bay House has it all!
The Bay House is one of surprises. First of all, its location: as soon as you enter your room and see the views, you feel, "Yes, this is the Hawaii I dreamed about." The rooms are spotless with breathtaking ocean views from every window. Our hostess freely gave us local information, suggestions and maps. It's obvious she loves her town and state. She also provides a large sitting room amply supplied with books, magazines and food with a full-size refrigerator for guest use. You're within a walk of downtown and also handy to the more distant sights: an active volcano, lovely parks, waterfalls and flora. Even when it rained, we found it delightful to enjoy the views from the lanai. A visit to the Bay House and its environs etch a mental image of what old Hawaii may have been like. If you want a different Hawaii, the Bay House in Hilo is it.This was my second visit and I'm hoping for more!
Love the Bay House Hilo Hawaii
We have stayed twice at this wonderful B&B. Once in 2003 and most recently in July 2005. Great Location. It is a 10 minute walk over the bridge to Hilo and go to the great "farmers" marketplace (several mornings) and all the restaurants and shops. We enjoyed the jacuzzi overlooking the bay. I loved the rainforest shower head. The room was well appointed. We especially enjoyed the leisurely/in room/ continental breakfast. ( A higher priced B&B we stayed at had a 20 minute window, 8-8:20, for a single choice hot breakfast that could only be in the breakfast area not in the room. There was a continental available for the room)
The Bay House Hawaii hospitality was superb with Tina checking on all aspects of our satisfaction. We will definitely return!
Absolutely a true find
We were fortunate to have found this gem in Hilo. This is what paradise is all about. Our hostess (and her family) were incredibly gracious. She offered us information on the island, restaurants and gave us perfect directions. The room was beautiful and overlooked an awe inspiring ocean. We couldn't have asked for more. The breakfast was delicious and now I will only have papaya if it has sliced bananas in them. (We're truly spoiled). We were only able to stay here for 2 nights but forever wouldn't have been enough time. We'll certainly be back.
Wonderful, peaceful, supremely comfortable!
I think the Bay House is absolutely first-rate! We've stayed there three times in the past five years, and each time it's been equally outstanding. Contrary to another review of the place, which complains about the lack of a common eating area, we thought it a nice benefit to be able to eat on our room's balcony overlooking Hilo Bay without feeling obliged to socialize. The house is absolutely quiet and peaceful, especially in the mornings, when you awake to the soothing sound of the surf, which is about twenty feet from the three rooms, all of which face the ocean. I was born and raised on the Big Island, and although I now live in California, the owners seem to have the true spirit of o'hana -- a family environment, very friendly and welcoming. In fact, we were invited to dinner by the owners one night (which we had to decline, sadly, due to another family commitment). I can't recommend the place highly enough. The beds were the most comfortable I've ever slept on; the food was great; the room rates are very reasonable; and the rooms were spotlessly clean.

What is the weather like now?
I have a question for people who are in Hawaii now:)
We are going on a cruise around the islands on March 19th and when I look on weather forecast it says rain every single day for every island!!!
Is it really true, is it raining every day now? I thought Hawaii was supposed to be good weather:(
RE: What is the weather like now?
One of the greatest misperceptions about Hawai`i is that is all sunshine and blue sky.
I can honestly say that it rains just about everyday somewhere on each of the major islands. That is because of the tradewind interaction with the tall mountains. And all this rain produces the lush vegetation you will find on the windward sides of the islands.
And if a front moves through or – ugly thought – stalls over the islands, you will see plenty of rain in places it does not usually fall. It's just a roll of the dice.
Our last trip (Oct, '06) had plenty of rain and was a little disappointing. It seemed that it was front after front that moved through.
However, we did manage to have some clear skies at times. So it is not all bad.
Maintain a positive attitude and the rain will not detract from your vacation. Right? Well, that old adage about smile and the world smiles with you certainly holds some truth – somewhere.
A hui hou aku!
